I want to start reclaiming my bank charges but need to request my satements. instead of inclosing a postalorder can i ask nationwide to debit my natiownide credit card.
  • Hi. I have a Nationwide building society current account (with debit card) and credit card, however since I opened the account in December 2005. I have paid £120 in bank charges which are still at the standard rate £20 plus for refused direct debits etc. (they have not reduced them in line with the banks £12…).

Anyway when I received the first charges of course I phoned them and they refunded the first charge (£20) :T, but when it happened a second time they refused. So I sent them the first letter, to which they replied stating that if I could not keep to the T&C of the account I could close the account.

I don’t want to close the account as then I would have to open a new current account and my credit rating is not that good. Also it is mostly likely that when the OH and I get a place our mortgage will be with them so looks good to have banking history with them (and they are the only bank/building society open on Saturdays in town). OH has had an account with them for over twenty years!

But hey I want my money back!

  • All banks can and some do close your account so it really is up to you if you wish to proceed.

Has anyone actually had there account closed by Nationwide since trying to claim back bank charges?

Nationwide seem to be one of the worst banks for closing accounts after people have claimed. They have done this lots of times. Have a read through THIS THREAD

  • 12/12/06 - I watched The Money Programme which Stephen Hone was featured on.
12/12/06 - Wrote 14 day letter to Nationwide (estimated £1542.80).
06/01/07 - Received letter stating that Nationwide's fees are in line with Terms etc.
08/01/07 - Filed Court Claim online.
10/01/07 - Nationwide acknowledge claim and state that they will defend it.
16/01/07 - Nationwide pay £728.70 in my account.
16/01/07 - Nationwide write to confirm refunded charges and mention that my FlexAccount AND my e-savings account will be closed on 17th February 2007.
16/01/07 - DPA letter sent - So I can double check charges.
22/01/07 - DPA Department at Nationwide called me (see below).

DPA Department at Nationwide phoned me today to ask if I wanted EVERYTHING they had (which would take longer and be a foot thick!) or just my statements - I asked for just the statements. Bloke was very polite and knew why I was asking for them. He mentioned that it looked like a templated letter - which I confirmed and he asked "Just out of interest..." where I got it from as they're getting hundreds. I explained roughly and he mentioned that it may be worth re-wording the bit where it asks for ALL details held, as this would speed things along a lot for everyone.

Hopefully I'll have all my statements this week.

Although it may speed things up a bit, it is better to ask for ALL the details they hold on you. This includes any information on manual interventions on your account, and any defaults the bank may have applied to your account in the past.

The worst case scenario this could lead to would be in court. If you issue a court claim, the bank could use information they haven't sent you to defend their case. If you only ask for statements, you could miss a lot of information the bank holds on you, and may be relevent to your claim.

I would advise people not to change the wording of the template. It has been researched, and worded as it is for a very good reason.

    Hi all

firstly id like to say a big hi to all, Martin & Radio2 have been a valuable source of important information.

Ok im trying to recover around £1300 in charges and interest from my building society they sent me a letter this morning,

The basic out line is as follows:

They thanked me for taking the time to get in touch and went on to say they are aware of speculation about fees and charges in the media and that the Office of fair trading has issued a directive regarding credit cards.

The second paragraph goes on to say that if they allow payment of unpaid DD and other items they make charges in accordance with the terms and conditions laid out when i signed up for the account and i signed an acceptance of these charges.

the third paragraph went on to say that the nationwide is open and transparent regarding its fees and openly include charges debited on all its statements and if i feel i cannot abide with the tariffs then it may be wise to open another account else where.

and lastly they said they are unable to refund my charges and give me a contact to discuss the matter.

Is this kind of letter what everyone else gets and if so can i now go to stage three a letter concerning court action?

Hi, I have just got exactly the same letter from Nationwide today after I sent them the letter detailing all my charges a week ago today. Very quick.

    What now? Stage 3?
