  • I feel so mean because I am not getting my daughters a rocking horse for Christmas or any designer clothing! And I'm also buying them only 2 presents each and not 20 !

Actually we have enough money in the bank to buy several of these rocking horses and many wardrobes worth of designer clothes but we are a money savvy household and have different priorities such as saving for potentially 4 lots of university fees. We also like our children to know and appreciate the value of money so if they ever get the latest gadgets, which is quite rare, they are invariably the last children in the class to get them as we wait for prices to go down.

I don't think by limiting our children to £50 each worth of Christmas presents is going to mean they are any less happy than those children who have ££££s spent on them.
  • DS1 is getting golf lessons, a PS2 game, a Family Guy Tshirt, a book and a few other gizmos. I don't mind spending a fair bit on him, as he's at an age where the things that are "important" do cost a bit.

DS2 is getting a wooden castle that cost me £20 in Home and Bargain. I'd actually bought it for his birthday, then come across a shop selling Lunar Jim toys half price, bought him fifteen quids worth (four toys) and decided that he really didn't need the castle as well.

DS3 is getting a bubble. £20 inc games.

Last year, I over-bought. I'd got two presents each for the little ones, but then worried that they hadn't got enough, so I'd got extra bits from the charity shops (toys and games in v. good condition, and they're too young to care). Come Christmas morning, it made me feel quite sick how much they'd got once you'd included stuff from friends and family. We'd invited an old lady who lives next door in to watch them open their gifts, and I was embarrassed to be honest. Especially as her gifts to them were just lost in the sea of "stuff".:embarasse

we were talking about this at baby group this week and it seems everyone else has bought loads more than i have, my baby will be 17 months old and i've only bought 3 things so far, spent well under £50. everyone else seemed to have spent over £200 at least, but my kids get presents from 20 or 30 other people and we usually feel swamped by it all - just too much stuff.

my ten year old is getting a wii but not much else, he doesn't believe in santa anymore and somebody told him that you don't get a stocking if you don't believe :rotfl:

if my ten year old asked for something (designer trainers etc.) then they would be his present but he doesn't, he just gets cheap as chips stuff from ebay, charity shop or supermarket so i wouldn't include it as presents really.

cheaper than chips really, chips are mighty expensive nowadays :D
