Interesting thread, a classic business model.

I switched back in October 2010 from VM, my new price is £8.50.

The 20GB limit is fine, and I have a speed of around 6Mbps. However I do use P2P whenever I download a new Linux distro, so the last time I used a torrent was back in October just before switching.

After reading this thread, I've just checked and I'm getting 5.6kb from 46 seeds and it'll take just under 2 days to download.

I'd also thought that youtube shouldn't buffer as much as it does.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Are people who got six months free on their legacy package on PAYG or Pay Monthly or does it not make any difference?

PAYG here. I don't think it makes a difference...

I'm using my son's O2 mobile number ( he is on Pay Monthly) as I left O2 last month due to their dire retentions offers.

Just got offered 6 months free on my Standard package.

They'll give you much better deals than than if you push them since you have both line rental and broadband with them. Which package you should go for depends on what you use your internet for. iPlayer? Torrenting (if you don't know what that is then don't worry because you don't do it :) )? Or just emails etc?

Further to what I was saying earlier, torrented something just after 4PM and I was getting 150kb/s, which is fine for me. It may even have been the number of seeds limiting it rather than traffic management, so I'm quite happy as I am...

Ha - we laughed .... Torrent what... yep - ya right we dont use it cause we never heard of it. ! Just googled it - so now we know.

Just rang o2 back but they finish at 8pm .. What telephone number is retentions?

Do you have only a master socket or do you have other phone extensions?

Have you tried the test socket behind the master socket faceplate?

    Hi Jem,

    Thanks for your reply.

We have one master socket in which the phone line goes into and then the filter for which the router goes into.

Yes we have tried it straight into the socket behind the faceplate - no difference in speed.

Your filter should go into the master socket and then the phone line and the router should both go into the filter. Is that what you mean?

Can you post the stats from your O2 router so we can see what speed you should get?

Here's how if you don't know.

Just to confirm - during the initial 6 months free, is it ok to not top up my O2 mobile, and still have the BB for free?

O2 told me that was fine when i asked that question.........

If you look in your online account during the free period, you'll actually see the price coming up as the full price without the o2 mob discount (mine does anyway), but of course you're not paying anything because its free. So by that logic it doesn't matter about topping up or not.
  • So it appears that a lot of people who got six months free are on PAYG and won't even need to top up during the free period.

    You lucky blighters ! :)

Though if you don't need to top up £10 once in 6m, it would seem that you don't have much use for your mobile anyway...
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
