Good point, actually could do with something like that for work, can you remember where you got it?

    +1 I think I just discovered another gadget I didn't realise I needed!

True, but my point was that if the makers need to re-jig and retool for each new phone it's smaller market share than a standard iphone connector
No it isn't. The connector is a bog standard micro-USB which is more common that the Apple connector.

    Here you go.

There's also a kit with a standard spare battery and no extended battery cover, or you can buy the cradle without a spare battery.

Your probably right as a form factor of the connector, but the Apple connector is standard across the range. Any apple product with the connector will fit, thats a huge market, its also backwards compatable so a made for ixxx device has a huge market.

The mini USB placement and how it's used and wired varies across makers and even within makers, some use it to carry audio as well as data and power, other use a standard 3.5'' jackplug.

Now the 3.5'' jackplug is probably even more universal, but not as simple as you need a USB to power the device and the jackplug to get sound out.

Apples solution is far neater and elegant, but then Apple design is always a strongpoint. And no that doesn't make it better or worse just a more integrated system. Or you may prefer to say closed in that everyone who designs a made for ixxxx device has to pay royalties if they want to use the made for ixxxx logo's.

I know and I hope they do, but each mobile co makes it's own variation on the interface to sell it's own brand of accessories.

The USB to headphone 3.5'' jackplug adapter for a Motorola won't work on a Desire, so you can't build commonality into a dock to fit everything without having to have lots of flying leads, one to charge and one to the heaphone socket.

You make a fair point, but I don't see compatability of accessories as a major issue (for me) unless price becomes and issue, but given that manufacturers are standardising around a common connector with no proprietary fee to pay, that's unlikely ever to be the case.

I bought a kit which included my dock (which charges the Desire and a spare battery), a mains USB charger, a USB charging lead, a high capacity battery and a battery cover for the phone (to take the high capacity battery) for £19.99. And it also means that when I travel, one charger and lead covers my phone, my bluetooth headset and my Kindle.

The whole mobile industry thinks the Iphone is the holy grail, hence the reason they all try to replicate its success.

I totally agree with what you. It always been the case, Apple brings a product out (iPhone) and then everyone started to think differently.

Apple brings in the new ideas, but eventually gets stomped by competitors such a Blackberry, Samsung.

Clear example is the iPad, now Blackberry is coming out playbook, Samsung have it lil Tab which is s^it. And Motorola is coming out with xoom:).

You can clearly see the trend.

Apple will always have customers due it its pure genius new ideas. Rest of the brands just follow it:).

And no, I dont work for Apple, if u were wondering.:T
