Well, after posting the message I sat stewing for a bit a decided to ring back and give notice to cancel my contract.
I got through to a friendly sounding chap saying I wanted out, he started processing the cancellation and they asked why I wanted to go. I explained my previous call and that I had basically been accused of lying about the deal Claremac was offered. The guy then said he was likely to have more infomation on the system than the previous person I spoke with and would look into it (I got the impression he was in a more senior position, though I might be wrong.) He explained the offer was a 'Legacy Tariff' ie one no longer available as new, but can be offered in a retention situation. He could see that a deal had recently been offered and could see no problem in matching it.
So, to confirm I got the HTC Desire on an 18 month contract, with 250 mins per month, 3000 text and 1 gb mobile internet. Should I not decide to upgrade in 18 months the tariff will be available for 99 months!!!
It appears that retensions department is made up from three seperate sections. The first dont have access to "legacy tariffs" and therefore will not be much help if you call and want a deal matched. The second section (I spoke with) appear to have access to these old tariffs and seem to have more flexability in offering you a deal. The third lot appear to have much more discretion and are apparently 'proactive' in offering deals. I recall Claremac saying Virgin actually called her, so it could have been from that department.
I know this posting is a bit lengthy, but wanted to be as comprehensive as possible, hopefully soem other customers will be able to get the deal.
PS, on the Insurance front, Go Compare Gadget insurance appears to be the best deal I've seen so far, around the £40 mark. Though of course if any one knows of better.....0 -
I called up yesterday to cancel my contract as I want an HTC Desire - i've browsed around a bit already so was armed with details of other deals!
Was originally offered 200 mins, unlimited texts and 1GB internet (+ free desire) for £20.43 per month. I am a Virgin Media customer also, and as this is the 'standard' offer available online for Media customers it seemed a bit stingy to me!
The nice man spoke to his manager and finally offered 600 mins, unlimited texts and 1GB internet (+ free desire) for £20.43 per month. It's a 24 month contract though, but I don't change my phone regularly so i'm happy with that. It was the first time I had phoned so I could have probably pushed it, but i'm no good at confrontation0 -

Depending on how much you want to push it, I think you could get them down lower than that. If they are prepared to offer that as an upgrade deal, I think you could get even better if you ask for your PAC code, give them your notice and get put through to retentions.
You've nothing to lose, you can always call back before the notice date and tell them you've changed your mind.0 -
well yeah. ideally we dont want to pay above £15 each. they are getting two deals out of us and we text competitions so its always about £5 above rental.0

My contract with Virgin expires tomorrow. I phoned and said I wanted a HTC Desire, but for less money and with more minutes than is offered online. Nice woman in Retentions told me that they could do it for £25 a month with 600mins, unlimited texts and 1gb free. She told me then about the newest HD HTC Desiree which is £35.74 a month. I asked if she could do it cheaper and she talked to her manager and said I could have it for £35.74 a month but with a £10 recurring discount each month so it will come in at £25.74. I will have 1000 mins, 3000 texts and 1gb mobile. Result!0 -
I re-newed my Virgin contract a couple of weeks ago, firstly telling them I wanted to cancel, then being offered a deal. I got an HTC Desire with 250 mins, unlimited texts (capped at 3000 I think) and 2GB of data for £15/month on a two year contract. They offered the Desire HD at £20/month but I declined.
I phoned their contracts team on 0800 1831150 and they couldn't do enough to help.
Technically I am on a £20/month contract but I get a recurring £5/month discount applied to my account.
For those considering a Nokia N8, the Desire gets far better reviews. I have always bought Nokias in the past, but I am thrilled with my new toy, it is superb."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -
I'm into month 16 of an 18 month contract with Virgin Mobile on a £12 Virgin Media tariff. I got a call from Loyalty yesterday and had a very pushy chap on offering me another 18 months on the discontinued £12 tariff with a Samsung Wave delivered free on a 28 day return if you don't like it basis. I declined despite it being a now or never deal. I hadn't looked at what was about and had no intention of taking the first thing I was offered - glad now as there seem to be some better deals on offer! I did ask if I could be called back in a few days when I had a chance to read reviews of the phone but was told this didn't happen which conflicts with what is being said here! I hope the inbound and outbound departments are different as I don't want to come up against Mr Pressure-Sales again!0
