The deal I was offered on the HTC Desire (see post 3) was for 18 months. Virgin are due to ring me at 4pm so will post back after.

Well, Virgin rang as promised (no surprise!) but there was no budging them on price as he said it was a very good deal. TBH I think that's true but I did give it a go! I've taken the deal and my Desire is supposed to arrive tomorrow although I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't come until Wednesday. I took Virgin's insurance package as I can cancel at any time. It seems to cover everything I need but I think it's a bit pricy at £7.99 p.m. so I will continue to look for a better deal on that. I've looked at my home insurance cover but there's a £100 excess which isn't great. Off to check out some apps..............

Don't know if it helps but I had a call from Virgin today as my contract runs out in March. They offered me an HTC Desire with 250mins and unlimited text and internet for £20. Alternatively the HTC Wildfire for £12 with the same deal. Currently Looking at reviews of the Desire and it looks like an excellent phone. Probably going to have a look at one in town tomorrow as Virgin are ringing me back on Monday.

thats good. we dont want to pay more than £15 a month as theres two of us but when i phoned at half five she wouldnt budge off advertised prices!!! have been phoning a round a bit today. have to stick with virgin or vodafone because of hubby signal at work.

When I got put onto my current deal, I phoned up and asked for my PAC code. I think the only way you'll get a decent deal is if you actually give them notice that you're leaving. If they don't offer you an acceptable deal there and then, they'll probably call you back in a few days with one.

You've nothing to lose by asking for your PAC code and giving notice to leave, you can always change your mind before the cut off date. Call their bluff and see what happens.

The key is to be put through to their retentions team, which tends to happen either when you ask to leave or they call you as your contract is running out (Virgin originally rang me to extend my deal about a month and half before the end of the contract, asking me whether I'd like to extend and so on).

It's an odd system - speak to the wrong person in the wrong team and they couldn't care less, get the right one and they'll pull out all the stops. Fairly frustrating!

pearsoneys -- when does your contract end? I should imagine they'll be much more helpful when it's close.

Claremac -- I think there's an article on here about mobile phone insurance, which mentions self insurance. Not sure how much your phone is worth, but consider just putting the £8 aside each month rather than investing in insurance - supposing you don't usually need it! Considering most phone companies will fix hardware issues within warranty for free, as long as your careful it's a decent money saver...

we have two. both run out on 11/3/11 but they rang hubbys phone - and spoke to me because both are in my name. his is up for renewal now. i think today he will call and ask for his pac code and give them the 20 days notice and see what they come up with thank you
originally on friday a bloke said - yes they should offer you this and that as was emailing the retentions to call me saturday. he said mine should be up ' in a week or so ' too. and getting two phones and taking a fiver off each and getting web wouldnt be an issue especially as we have virgin media too but then like you say this lady couldnt care less yesterday!
Thanks for your advice. I'm going into town today so will go look in a few phone shops so i can compare good deals and ask virgin to beat them if we find one that suits.

@Claremac - Did you get the phone ok in the end? I'm due an upgrade from Virgin within the next few days and made my opening gambit with them earlier today. I would have been happy with the deal you were offered, but was only given 24 month contract options (too long in my view.)

When I said I was quoting directly from this site and mentioned the deal you were offered I was basically accused of being 'mis informed' and that Virgin do not offer that any deals like that. Rather than get into an arguement I decided to leave it, would you be able to confirm what deal you were offered and who you spoke with?

Like you I think you got a good deal, I'd just like them to offer it to me!!!

IMHO - Tesco has best deal at the moment - 500 minutes, unlimited [probably 3000] texts and 500mb internet for £10 per month PAYG. I rang my provider Virgin and they equalled it but at least 1gb internet for £10-23 [VAT increase].
This is a sim only deal on a rolling monthly contract by direct debit so I can cancel at any time and the new deal came on instantly. They charge me the same as before £15-00 with a £5 credit plus the VAT increase c.30p [old deal had no internet]

I also need a new mobile as a 2" screen is no good for internet and the optimum one is the Orange San Fransico, rated as the best sub £280 mobile.
    http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobile-phones/orange-san-francisco-review-50001481/

Through TCB to Orange it is £99 + £10 top-up less £12-12 so £97 delivered. It is really easy to unlock yourself just a web site put in your IMEI number and follow instructions to put code in. You could also take your life in your hands and root and upgrade to Android 2.2 Froyo but this is VERY RISKY IF you do not know what you are doing but I have been quoted £15 by a local mobile shop to do it.
    http://itbod.wordpress.com/2010/12/20/orange-san-francisco-phone-handset-how-to-unlock-root-and-upgrade-android-2-1-to-2-2-froyo/

BTW on Virgin, they keep taking my rewards off me [£40], I queried this when I called and she said that they should not be accumulated on sim only deals. I looked today and they were back so I ordered a new phone with a 3" screen for backup [just £5 P&P], it is also worth £15-£40 on re-sale LOL and is being delivered tomorrow morning.
    >> UPDATE New Monte Slider sold on EBay for £24 so [after fees, postage, etc.] balance is £15 cash to me.

So I have a new GTE Blade [Orange San Franscico] for £82 plus 500mins, 3000 texts & 1gb Internet for £10-30pm on rolling monthly sim-only from Virgin.
