This thread is moving fast! Did put this as an edit on previous post.
Batgirl, can you describe what happened when you lost control. Did the car go light? did it pull to one side. did the back end swing out on you? were you accelerating, decelerating, braking, steady driving?
Please the more info the better.
The first time I was going around a corner and yes it went light I thought maybe it was ice or speed I was braking at the time or a mixture of both so slowed down completely the second time again a corner where the car turned completely after that I had no control even driving down a straight road at 20mph if I steered even slightly (which I tried just to see) the car just swung around as if the tyres were bald with no grip everything light.May 2015 £10 a day currently £2080 -
I can't believe the advice so far, lol.
Batgirl, I'm assuming the mileage is low/average for the model year? If you bought it from a dealership, especially a main dealer, and spent £7,500 on a car, I'd like to think they sold it with some kind of waranty. Even if they didn't, if you don't believe it's fit for use, you have every right to ask them to check it out for you, even after 6-weeks with it. It would be a different matter if you bought it privately, but you didn't. You could just be unfamiliar with it, being a new car to you, and it is French, don't forget!
I'm sure if you take it back and explain your concerns, the dealer will help you out.0 -
I think this is just a case of an unfamiliar car in challenging conditions, unless there is a fault then no the dealer will just make more profit off your back they will not consider taking it back unless on a deal with another car, however, if you paid £7500 for a nearly one yr old 207 i presume it is a relatively low model in the range? These do come with thinner tyres and hence might not handle up to the level of your Focus, which to be honest was one of the best handling cars ever made in its class.
We all buy cars we hate, one small failure fixed under warranty doesn't make it a bad car as such, neither does the car sliding around in the cold and damp, I think you might be driving it like your old Focus, which is a mistake as the 207 is inferior in pretty much every way, take a few days and rethink the spins, just because you think you weren't at fault doesn't mean you weren't, the car is unfamiliar, and even though you thought the comments where not constructive they are probably correct in that you never adapted your driving style suit the new (slightly inferior) car.
Sorry if it sounds harsh, but unless something is broken or damaged the only thing that would cause a spin in the current weather is unfortunately the nut behind the wheel.
Don't forget that just because another car could drive on the road doesn't mean you can, they might have better tyres, a better car, are familiar with their car or sadly may just be a better driver, I seen loads of people spin out in the recent weather, when the same road caused me no problems, and after driving my wifes Clio on almost new Continentals(front tyres) last year and then on Avon ZV3s (front tyres)this year it is plain that the tyres you have on makes a huge difference to the car, I thought my wifes Clio was a bit crap last year in the winter snow, but this year was preferable to my Mondeo.
Don't make a split second decision that you will be sorry for later.0 -
I drove a 12 year old BMW 323i in snow and on ice with carp tires and never lost control (but then again I have knocked up mile after mile in winters abroad) there is most probably nothing wrong with the car and stop being a drama queen and check the make, model and compound of the tyres on the car.0

again 20 mph is pretty fast if you have no control
i drove up my drive parked up got and and laughed as my car slid about 20 foot back wards on its own my drive is nearly flat luckily a tree caught it safely but it was amuzing. so if your doing 20mph then you had no chance if it was sheet ice0 -
I'll give you £4k cash for the car unless its pink ;o)))))))0

Thank you for this it is not what people have said more the manner they have said it I have found frustrating and upsetting, no constructive criticism or help just people enjoying my mistake.May 2015 £10 a day currently £2080 -

From these comments alone it sems it was the conditions not the car, just give a few weeks to get used to it and don't forget that not all tyres are the same, not all cars are the same in slippy conditions, and that there is nothing wrong with having a slip and a slide in an unfamiliar car on slippy roads. And above all remember that when you felt the steering go light you had already lost most of your grip, even a slight turn of the wheel or dab of the brakes could cause a spin.
Every body has different driving skill levels and experience, if yo drive a few times a week then you will struggle in these conditions compared to somebody that drives hundreds of miles a day.
Don't be over critical of yourself or the car, you will be a better, safer driver because of these little slips and slides, you will be better prepared for the next time.0
