All of my 3 have had trouble with wind and/or colic to some extent but my younger son was by far the worst. I tried everything for him including infacol dentinox and colief. I went through every bottle on the market with him as well with little success but that was 3 years ago and bottles are all different again now! I tried going up a teat size but all that achieved was loads more washing! I tried all of the different ways of winding him that everybody suggested to me. What worked for us in the end was giving him some very warm water out of one of the tiny 2oz bottles from savers before feeding him and strangely enough it brought lots of wind up.

With my daughter who is now nearly 13 weeks I changed her from the tommee tip pee ctn bottles on the advice of our gp and hv. I chose the mam ultivent ones and although she still had wind it became very easy to bring up.

Every child is different though and different things work for them as I read rave reviews about dr browns bottles but found myself at best disappointed after I spent a fortune buying them for my little guy and they did nothing for him.

My LO has bad colic and I've did the same (we were feeding expressed bm) - changed from tommee tippees ctn to mams.

We've also been using colief (on prescription) and its been a godsend. Thankfully LO not so affected anymore but it was hell for a while.

Thank you everyone, I'm grateful to have so many hints and tips. We've got the TT CTN bottles so maybe a common theme? The HV said not to bother changing apart from trying the next teat. We've tried the "2" teat and variflow and we think LO got a bit stressed at the speed/volume it came out at so we've switched back to the first teats. We're using infacol already which is definitely helping.

Regarding the water - is there an age limit of when babies should have it?

DH and I have decided to work in shifts and just stay up with our boy and just let him sleep where he is comfy and settled and get on top of the feeding times and amounts first. Once that's a bit more sorted then we'll start trying to put him down again. So far and I know it's very early our LO has been very settled and seems so much more happy. Bless.

He shouldnt need water at all really... not one of mine ever had anything other than milk until they were 6 months or so.. even then they would rather do without than drink water! If you think he is thirsty offer him a little before a milk feed.. chances are he will behave as though you are trying to poison him lol.

I am glad something is helping your little one Doglover. :D. I know that it won't mean much to you just now but colic really does ease up as they get bigger. If any family or friends offer any help make sure you take them up on it as experience has taught me that even a 10 min break to go to the corner shop leaves you in a better mental state to care for a child who is constantly distressed and upset. My little guy screamed mostly non stop for over the first year of his life and my DH works away a lot so at times it left me feeling very fragile. :o.

Water can be given from birth just make sure your little one is quite upright when you give it to him.
  • if you were asking about the water to help with his wind, then if he didnt like drinking it from a bottle, you could just give him a couple of teaspoonfuls if he gets windy-this used to help mine (it actully helped them more than all the gripe water type things!)
If you were asking as in to give him a drink, then as the others said!!

Thanks M&M That is exactly the quantity of water that I was meaning hence the suggestion for the tiny bottle to give it from. I used the bottle to give it from as they would take just enough for it to work before realising that it was not milk...and also that I was so nervous about giving it from a spoon as both of my boys were preterm and absolutely tiny. I used the water before a feed as it helped take the wind away leaving their stomachs more able to hold enough feed for them to feel more full up.

Sorry if my posts are a bit incoherent just now but have recently had a few totally sleepless nights due to back to school/nursery viruses and germs! :o

Doglover - have you got a dog?! I've got collies and Charlotte had colic as a baby. I always made sure I had a walk on my own with the dogs. That was my "me time" and getting out of the house just for 20 minutes and appreciating the peace of the fields and woods where I walk was a huge help in dealing with it. I always felt much calmer and better equipped to deal with her upset when I'd had a good walk.

Last day of the school holidays here as they all go back tomorrow :( Going to Tesco to buy lunchbox stuff this morning, and then going ten pin bowling this afternoon.

Have a good day all xx
