Joe definitely prefers home cooked food with good flavours to bland, shop-bought stuff :) I find if I have shop-bought stuff I need to put some extra veg that I've cooked at home in it, to give it a bit more flavour.

Is 8 1/2 months too young to be introducing lumpy food? I'm trying to move on from smooth purees, but he's really not keen on things with lumps in. Is it just a case of persevering?

Would it be OK to give a baby chorizo? I'm not sure if it's too salty. Although it would be a fairly small part of the overall meal (pasta bake) - I really need to get into the habit of giving Joe whatever we're having for tea instead of making things specially for him.

Good luck with the sports day Becles!

I agree BB, the shop bought stuff is just bleuugh!

It is ok to use regular full fat cows milk in cooking isn't it?

I use full fat cows milk in cooking. I think it's fine as long as you're not giving it as a drink.

Hi BB, my LO id 8 months next week and I've been giving her lumps for ages. Maybe 6 or 8 weeks. I thought I was supposed to move her onto lumps fairly quickly. When I make a pasta dish for her I just break up the pasta before it's cooked and she chews it. I cut veg in a fine dice before cooking and she gets raisins in porridge (thanks to a tip here). When i make cauliflower cheese, I just break up the cauliflower a bit.

Thanks CL. Did your LO take to them fairly quickly? I tried J with lumps a while back and he gagged so I left it for a bit before trying again and that's just kept on happening. I guess I just need to stick at it until he gets used to them.

    Hi ladies.

MV - Me and LO are doing well thanks. Still have 100s of medical appointments and his development is a few months behind, but he's getting there. Cant beleive he's 11 months soon - time flies.

As for food - shop bought is foul. We try and give LO whatever were having. He's on to small lumps in his food, but apart from wotsits (I know not very healthy) he wont bite off chunks. He just sucks, swallows and gags. I just keep offering him the lumper food and wait till he gets used to it.

I would think so if it's part of a meal as the salt will be well diluted. I still used normal stock cubes and stuff as if you think of one stock cube in a meal to go round everyone and the baby is having a tiny portion, the salt content has got to be minimal enough not to worry about. I don't add extra salt when cooking or at the table.

My Grandad used to love salt. He would put so much on that his dinner had a salt crust on the top. Yuk!

Keep trying with the lumps. They get used to them in the end. Or try a bit of chunky food like crusty bread or fruit or veg that they can hold and chew. That sometimes works better as they are in control of eating and less likely to gag. Wotsits may not be that healthy but they are still giving skills in holding and chewing food, and a few wotsits in an otherwise healthy diet are not going to cause any problems. Best to look at the bigger picture with food and not just focus on that particular meal or snack.

I used full fat cows milk in cooking and on cereals before they were one. It's just not recommended as a main drink as they need the extra nutrients in boob/formula milk.

Health visitor has been and Charlotte showed off and did all her jigsaws while we were talking. They brought some scales to weigh her but she was too heavy for the set they brought. We were chatting and she disappeared off upstairs and came back with our bathroom scales and stood on those instead :rotfl:
Here I go again on my own....

He's OK with finger foods, just not keen on lumps in his mushy stuff. But I probably need to give him more finger foods, tbh. He loves Organix carrot sticks, which are like big wotsits. He'd probably munch his way through a whole bag if I let him :) They don't half make a mess of his clothes though!

I've obviously never met your Charlotte, but I love her! She sounds like such a character :D

Bigbird Bob wont eat mushed food or purees he will only eat finger foods now - he is a fusspot. There is loads he will eat but loads he wont as well. If I do spag bol I just cut his pasta up and he eats that and couscous and yoghurts from a spoon and nothing else. He eats cucumber, red pepper slices etc, veg like runner beans, broccoli, peas baby sweetcorn that he can hold - not the peas I just pop them in for him lol. Then he'll bite off a strip of chicken or piece of pork chop or whatever. He likes macaroni cheese on toast, eggy bread, crumpets. but he wont eat homemade wedges, roast potatoes or mash potato. He tolerates an amount of new pots but not alot like 2 bites. He happily eats any type of fish I've popped bits of into his mouth and he loves fruit. Breakfast and lunch are never the problem its always dinner time, he's like his brother. DD was my least fussiest child, she ate anything, jars, my cooking etc and still does now.

DD school report was not very good, dont think she has progressed at all this year. I think the numpty newly qualified teacher who was clearly out of her depth is partly to blame but apparently lucy is doing no work at all even with 1-1 support - I had no idea about this, she seems to know everything if we do things at home. I'm considering going to the doctors though because she can be very hard work at home and I always just thought she was a difficult child but I do wonder if she has oppositional defiant disorder or similar. Also because she previously had speech problems I kind of put alot down to frustration but her speech is normal now. DS report on the otherhand was glowing - I knew it would be his teacher loved him lol

MV, we've had extra poos too but aren't yet weaning, so putting it down to the teething, we are saliva city here! She's getting a little nappy rash too, for the same reason. Btw happy half birthday to Josh, ours is next week.

LO has had a personality change this week. We've had two night sleep-thru's on the trot but at the expense of ANY daytime naps, she is all sweetness until I put her in the cot or pram and then we have a screeching, red faced, sobbing banshee on my hands - that is until I pick her up again. Anyone explain???

And I thought things were tough last week. Oh and our "bloom"ing replacement highchair has broken too. Appalling given the price we paid, I'm getting my money back and going for a cheapie Antilop instead.
