On the finger food issue...I have decided I need to start encouraging Josh to pick food up himself and have a go at eating it, as up to now it's been all puree's and spoon feeding.

I'm starting to get a bit braver with what I give him now too as he is now 6 months and has been on solids since just after he was 4 months.

He had some cheese for the first time yesterday, and some of my toast and butter this morning, which he liked (although he did gag a bit to start with!)

Going to get him some 'snacky' things in from this w/e like breadsticks, rice cakes etc. Also going to try giving him some pasta to chew on.

Should he be on 3 meals a day now he is 6 months? I am currently giving him breakfast and lunch as solid food, and milk (breast and formula) in between?

You don't even take him seriously,
How am I going to get to heaven?,

BB don't worry about the gagging too much, it's not coz he's choking, its a reflex reaction to a different texture, if you have to question if he's choking or not then he probably isn't;):)
Also have a huge fan of organix carrot stix:D The tomato noughts & crosses also go down a treat:)

MV have a look at babycentres weaning guide, give some great recipes and is a great guide to what LO should be having depending how far into weaning you are.
Toast is a great food for LOs imo, Lotties always been a fan, although not so good while it's being chewed and then she suddenly decides to sneeze, ended up with ABC toast all over my work clothes!:rotfl:

bigbird.. there is a 'window of opportunity' when the neural pathways are formed and the muscles of the face and jaw need to learn to chew.. if that period is missed it is much harder for them to learn the chew and swallow and speak some letters. It is from about 7-9 months I think.. it is a very small time period.

Did anyone see the Michael McIntyre sketch about babies? It made me laugh so much. He was saying that parents are constantly worrying about babies development and when they were going to walk and talk. He made a great point that he didn't know any adults that crawled and said gaga.

So there's not much point worrying, they will get there eventually.

Hi Mit3 - only just seen this post, have been wondering how you were getting on.

I think your OH should be helping you more at the w/e. When you say he won't get up early, is it that he works late on a Friday or something, or is he just lazy?

If you even have a suspicion that you may have a touch of PND you should see your GP. Hope things start to get better soon. x

My OH moans about having to get up early at the w/e, he still seems to be under the impression that w/e's are for lying in! I have had to explain to him on several occasions that we kissed goodbye to lie in's a lonnnng time ago!

I find the idea of staying in all day with DS a stressful one, but am making myself do it from time to time as finding things to do everyday can be knackering (and expensive!)

We have stayed in today and it's not been too bad. DS is happily bouncing away in his jumperoo at the moment, and has had a couple of naps today so I've been able to ebay some things and do a few bits and bobs around the house.

I don't think I could stay in more than once or twice a week though!

I'm feeling a bit better this week, which is a good because LO seems to have signed up for separation anxiety and its like having a newborn again. At least I get time to come on here while she sleeps on the boob. But oh the tantrums if I need the loo, food or dare to suggest she has a nap in her cot.

OH thinks HIS weekends are still for lie-ins. I usually dump her on him by 8, its not like he has to do the earlier shift and I then go make breakfast. But he makes a song and dance of how tired he is. But I'm usually up an hour before him during the week, plus night feeds, so if anyone was totting up who was getting the least sleep it wouldn't be him!

Yes, I would definitely encourage you to have your babies trying 'real' foods and different textures sooner rather than later! CM has an almost-3-year-old that still eats all his dinners from those mushy Heinz stage 3 trays...even then he barely eats any and she says he is SO picky and doesn't like most 'real' food...! blegh

That sounds awful aless. Surely the poor child can't be getting enough nutrients?

Well after all my stressing, J had lumpy food for his tea without too much fuss :o He didn't eat loads, but he had more than he's had in the past. I think his teeth are bothering him today as he also didn't eat much of his fruity custard, which he normally loves.

His tea was from a jar too, which is most unlike him. He's normally not keen on shop-bought savoury stuff - but I figured if I was going to end up chucking it in the bin, I didn't want it to be something I'd slaved over :p

So we will continue with lumps. I think someone mentioned putting raisins in porridge? (sorry, can't remember who that was) Do they just go in whole?

Odd question now - does anyone think their feet grew while they were pregnant? A few of my shoes seem too tight for me now. So, in the manner of pigpen, I will be doing some flinging this weekend :D It's a nightmare though, I've had to buy new ones... ;) Not very MSE though.

Hi I said I gave my LO raisins in porridge/Ready Brek (someone else here suggested it.) I've tried them whole, but at this point (nearly 8 months), she was swallowing the porridge and keeping the raisins in her mouth. After a few spoonfulls, she had about 10 raisins in her mouth and spit them out. So next time I used kitchen scissors and cut them up a bit and she chewed and swallowed them.

I'm so glad you said that about your feet! Mine have been half a size bigger from I was about 7 months pregnant and have never gone down! I also have found my ankles a bit stiff and sore for the first few minutes when I get up in the morning. Do you get this too?

Oh and my LO had about 4 prawn crackers tonight. She loved them (quite a bit on the floor though!)

raisins are dead flies... chopped dried apricot is much nicer and full of good things.. chopped fresh fruit is just as good.. strawberry, apple, pear, kiwi etc.. all so much easier to chew than rubber raisins.. plus the rest doesn't exit in the same form as it enterred!

When pregnant your feet are under so much pressure they do splat a bit..

Back to poo... we did 4 huge ones today.. inc 2 that escaped the nappy legs!!

Definitely. I had severe swelling and my ankles were the same width as my thighs. My feet were so big, I couldn't fit any socks and shoes on and the only thing I would wear was a cheap pair of flip flops with a toe post, as I managed to stretch the rubber straps over my fat toes :o

Second all the comments for trial and error with new foods. Also if they don't like a food on the first attempt, try it again in a few days, then in another few days and so on. It takes a few goes to build up a genuine dislike to foods and sometimes they appear not to like it at first just because it's a different taste.

Off to work this morning with a few odds and ends to do. Have a good day all xx
Here I go again on my own....
