Has your bank closed your account?

I seem to have read many questions asking whether banks will close accounts after claiming for charges etc. But I have not seen a direct answer?
I accept all banks must have different policies etc and do their own thing! However if you have an existing overdraft that they are currently wanting you to repay(just to get you onto a borrowing basis ie taking some kind of loan)and you reclaim charges .WILL they or can they insist on you repaying in full that amount and then close your account or must they enter into some kind of alternative arrangement for you to repay that overdraft?
Hope I am clear to everyone?0 -
When my folks were told their account would be closed in 30days (successful appeal followed) the later stated that if they were in credit at the time (dream on!), Abbey would pay them but if (= when!) they were O'drawn Abbey would require full payment immediately. Hope that helps bikergrandad0

fabianne wrote:Barclays threatened to close the business account that I have if it was not brought back in line with their terms and conditions.I told them they could not do this when an account was in dispute-I am reclaiming my bank charges after following the instructions on the Consumer Action Group website. I then complained about my Business Manager according to the Business Banking Code (section 14)as this was not a helpful nor sympathetic course of action from him,as stated in this code.
My account is in this state due to them applying unlawful bank charges that they keep applying.I shovelled money in-they kept bouncing dd's and cheques and this kept taking me over the overdraft limit.Enough money was going in each month-sometimes a lot more-but with these charges being applied-I could never catch up-it was very frustrating when I was slogging all the hours I could humanly manage to get it all taken in fees. Typically they charged me £35 for an unpaid dd payment and then £30 paid referral fee for then going over my overdraft limit=£65 per transaction. This has been a main reason for closing my business down as I was going further and further into debt.
I have just filed at Court for these charges that total over £2500.
Good luck to all and stand strong-it is YOUR money they are taking by charging daft fee's for an automated process.Claim it back.
Sounds like my situation with Royal Bank of Scotland.
My original account manager was ace. I could phone him and ask him to transfer money between my business and personal accounts to save me having to find a bank. (I was lorry driving at the time and it is almost impossible to find a bank witrh enough parking outside for an artic!)
He never moved anything without checking with me first but when he left the lass who took over though she had carte blanc to do as she pleased. She took money from my personal account to pay into my business account when it wasn't nessecary and didn't tell me so I was drawing on money I thought was in the account when she'd moved it and charged me for doing so.
I would get unpaid cheques and d/ds for which I was charged, she'd then take money from my business account, put it BACK into my personal account and charge me again!! They shuffled it so much that they ended up with all the money I had paid in through charges! Unbelievable!
When I chalenged her about it she told me they could do that. I told her not without my permission and she then told me that my previous account manager did it and was told in no uncertain terms that it was NEVER without my permission.
RBS then told me they were closing my business account, which they did, and sent my o/d to their collection agency without mentioning that to me. Nor did they tell me they were going to close my personal account. I learned of it when cheques came back unpaid and ones I had tried to pay in were returned from their closed accounts department! That dropped me right in the proverbial as my internet, mobile and landline phones, car insurance and a couple of other d/s were all came from that account.
I am claiming back all the charges and am going to try for a wedge of compensation as well. I've been writing and telephoneing RBS for the last nine months so they know the situation but just carried on merrily piling on the charges.
I apologise for the length of this posting but I think everyone should know what the Royal Bank of Scotland is like. If they start playing silly b's and won't help you out, don't wait Get out quick as they WILL close your accounts and send any outstanding monies to a debt collector. AND THEY PROBABLY WON'T EVEN TELL YOU THEY'RE GONNA DO IT!

my daughter in law is about to try and reclaim bank charges for the past six years from the Nat West - she has tried various banks to try to open another account incase the nat west close her original account but up to now has been refused - seems like we are falling at the first hurdle :-( does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do if the Nat West does close her account and she is left without a bank account to have her wages paid into. Many thanks for any suggestions.0

Hi I'm having the same problem as many on here, compounded by the fact that I've just lost my job on medical grounds so I'm now on benefits. After I was sacked I went over my overdraft limit and the charges started. Then, like so many others, I got deeper and deeper into debt because of the ridiculous charges applied by Lloyds. I've tried several other banks but nobody will let me open an account. Lloyds have been taking money to cover payments on a loan every time I've had a credit balance and then yesterday they took a loan payment out when I had no credit so I'm now £200 into my overdraft and my bills will again get bounced and so I'll get more charges applied and so on. I really want to claim my charges back but I can't get another account. And are they allowed to take the loan payment and make me overdrawn? I'll be grateful for any advice
Thanks

you will be able to get an account called "basic account", these accounts do not cheque book/over draft facilities etc. They usually aren't credit checked for them either. Most banks etc do them. Good luck0 -
Hi everyone, first post on this site.:D
I'm considering claiming charges back from Barclays, but have a couple of concerns.
I've read that upon claiming it is highly likely that Barclays will close my account within 30 days. This causes me something of a problem because my many years as a student (currently in Phd) has meant that i rely very heavily on my student account overdraft.
Though i am able to open a new student account with sufficient overdraft facilities, i can only do so once my barclays account has been closed. Herein lies the problem, would the fact that my account has been closed be detrimental to my claim to be refunded the charges?
If it wont be a problem then i can go right ahead close my account, open a new one with the necessary overdraft and then claim, safe in the knowledge that the required overdraft still exists. If it will be a problem then i'm not sure i'll be able to do to horrible barclays what they deserve!
Any advice is muchly appreciated0 -
Hi All,
Received letter from bank this morning to say they were paying me money I applied to small claims court. On the last page i am going to close your account hugs & kisses.
Do what they want i moved banks 7 months ago. Best part is can i notify courts that bank have paid up. Decisions decisions. Like everybody on here knows banks are there to make money, i slipped up a few times and got charged etc.
Its the charges which is getting peoples backs up and most importanly not having a ladder big enough to get you out of that hole when it happens.
And they use to call !!!!!! turpin a thief, lol.0 -

That would probably be because he was a thief.0 -
Elph,
You can claim back on closed accounts (as far as I know!) See here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=305960
Another option is to convert the student account to a normal current account - then you should be able to open a student account elsewhere (usually it is only other student accounts banks do not like!) That way you cxan leave the account open for the time being, just not used...
Hope that helps.0
