Co-Op bank charged me £39 for going 3p overdrawn, I complained in branch, the manager agreed to refund the charge but took my card off me, cut it up and closed my account immediately.

Edinburghlass wrote:After a question asked by user MarkKellie about which banks close your account after you have made a claim for the return of unfair bank charges I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for users to report if this has happened to them and which bank it is.
All that is required is to say which bank it is along with what accounts they closed as another concern users have is if their loan account will be closed or even their mortgage account.
Please don't ask questions on this thread but post them here and your Success Story please post here

Having gone overdrawn on my account by £19 due to delays in a tranaction being processed through the Banks clearing System. I asked for the £20 penalty charge to be refunded.
Nationwide refused to discuss the issue quoting T&C's and I went through the County Court process eventually getting the amount refunded plus costs. All correspondence dealt with by a faceless bureaucrat at Swindon
I have been a member for 20+ years and have several accounts with them; the shoddy manner in which I have been treated is disgusting; whatever happened to personal customer service. All for £20 they have lost a loyal customer of many years standing with all accounts in credit apart from this one slip - outstanding customer service for their members or what!
I may attend the AGM and raise the point there or has anyone written on this issue (to the Chairman) with any success?Save a Lert0 -
Edna_Bucket wrote:It baffles me as to why we are still getting posts like this. Why would they still want to deal with you - whether it's 5,10, 15, or 50 years you've been with them.
You reclaimed your charges - fair enough.
They don't want to deal with you - fair enough, we live in a democracy.
Rather than getting in a lather, try and look at it the other way round - if someone threatened to sue you (rightly or wrongly) would you really ever want to deal with them again?
No, I thought not.
Banks have been ripping people off left right and centre for years yet we have no choice to deal with them!!
You can't get a job thesedays without a bank account, and all of them break the law by charging more than the tue administration cost of going overdrawn - they have us all by the short and curlies...if i had known then what i know now0 -
Hi
I have a dormant account with First Direct which I believe I have in the region of £600 worth of fees that they owe me. However, I am also in OD with them to the tune of £900. I know that I can pay off anything remaining, so that is not a problem. However, I also have an account and various other services with HSBC, which I opened after my FD account went dormant. My question is: will FD pass on the fact that I have reclaimed charges to HSBC as they are in the same group? If so, will HSBC ask me to close my account, and will it affect my ability to get a mortgage etc. with them in the future?
Ta!It is not the bullet with your name on it, rather the one addressed "to whom it may concern" that should worry you!0 -
Beware of banks closing accounts. I opened a new account at another bank some time ago as I was in dispute re charges and other matters with my bank (HSBC). Having recently been informed of this site and the fact I could reclaim I took action against HSBC. Between the 1st letter and the 2nd stating court action not only did they close my account but they also have sold my account (it did have an ovedraft) to a debit collection agency therefore causing problems with my credit rating. It seems a new tatic is action. I am still persuing them for the charges though. Two can play at that game.:mad:0

I don't know if this has already been posted (I haven't got the time to go through 64 pages of posts!!) but here's an interesting bulletin from the Banking Code Standards Board to all members' (i.e. banks)Compliance Officers.
http://www.bankingcode.org.uk/bullet...DF%20FINAL.pdf
In summary, it says that if a customer has claimed back unfair charges, it is likely (though not in all cases) that the individual is in financial difficulty and therefore should be treated sympathetically.
I hope this helps when negotiating your refunds.
All the best to everyone.0 -
Stated today that they will not seek to close accounts, even if you take them to court for unfair charges and win :-)
