Even if they do, they should give you 30 days notice anyway.

  • The general consensus here seems to be:

"If you ask for your money back, the bank WILL close your account!"

However, they should give you 30 days...

So work on that basis... If asking for your money, make sure you do not owe them money and that you have somewhere else to bank.
  • My wife and I are looking to recover around £12000 from Lloyds/Tsb but are unable to open another bank account due to us both being involved with an IVA which if it had not been for these charges in the past 5 yrs would have helped fight against an IVA
  • Rob,

    Check this forum http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=319736

Some banks will let you open a basic account if you are bankcrupt, not sure about IVAs, but it is worth a look!

    Good luck
  • Nationwide WILL close your account. They are closing mine after giving me 30 days notice.
  • Hi - seems most banks are closing accounts after you've reclaimed charges. I know a lot of people argue that the banks are within their rights to close accounts as people aren't sticking to the t&cs. However, the argument that people have with the banks is not that they are applying charges for OD excesses etc, but that the amount of the charges do not accurately reflect the costs incurred. This is why we feel the charges are illegal.

Whether banks are allowed to do this is still being questioned. People should definitely put in a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service. If nobody complains, banks are going to keep doing whatever they like!!

And you think they aren't? You didn't address this in the rest of your post.

My daughter has just had letter to close Nationwide account.
    Hi,
I had my account closed in December a month after I got my funds refunded from Nationwide. Not only are they greedy, and totally irresponsable (for that emloyee loosing the laptop in their custody in a burglary) they are throwing customers out like bad milk. Let them rot and their customer numbers will dwindle so much that they go bankrupt!! Soon they won't have any customers left....

Well done to her for getting her money back!

A lot of people "argue" on the point? Nonsense.

It is a fundamental right of any business within a capitalist democracy to trade with people they want to or not. That is "freedom" and if you ran your own business would you not want to exercise that right too?

We might not like the banks but they have that freedom too. As I've said before it's not about whether they are right or wrong - personally I wouldn't trade again with anyone who threatened to sue me (rightly or wrongly) so why should they?
