is it true that HSBC are closing accounts that could cost them a lot in reclaimed bank charges???

i know of a few people now who's accounts have "mysteriously" been closed and the one thing they have in common is that they could all have claimed several thousand in unfair charges!!!!!

any one else heard of this???

the latest one a friend of mine has spent years in the red, and was just about getting on top of his financial affairs, when he paid £2000 into his account, his card was taken by a cash machine and when he asked why, was told the account had been closed due to a £1.48 unauthorised overdraft!!

No. Closure of the account (by either party) does not stop any future claim on charges, which is what you're suggesting is the reason.

And of course, you're intimately familiar with all the circumstances with respect to each account? I don't think so. you're just guessing. Wrongly in this case.

... amongst other things no doubt. Not that your friend will tell you these of course.

  • I went to draw money from my Alliance & Leicester account yesterday only to find they have closed it with no notice and on the day I get paid.

I have applied for my charges to be refunded and I applied for HARDSHIP refunds of £165 which they took from my account in October only to be refused. So I compalined to the Financial Ombudsman (still awaiting the outcome).

When I phoned the Alliance & Leicester they told me 'they had won' and have closed my account as I wasnt running it as I should, I have tried to explain that I am only over my overdraft because of the charges they have taken, a problem which has snowballed.

Interestingly enough, the told me in October it would be better if I downgraded to a 'Choice' account from my Premier one 'as it would help me manage better as the charges are lesser' I thought they were trying to help me but were probably trying to make it easier to close my account.

My wages have disappeared into the ether at present, I have no money to put pretrol in the car, no milk to put in my coffee this morning !!

I have no idea how I am going to sort all this out and they have caused me a lot of grief. I will be complaining about them - again.
  • my bank closed my account after THEY placed me overdrawn, as three direct debits failed to go through because of insufficient funds in the account, because of the three £39.00 charges THEY then imposed on my account they classed me as being overdrawn by £117.00
missed direct debit charges, very odd, theres no pain so how come the big gain,i.e £39.00 for a letter

They did EXACTLY the same to me 2 years ago. I went to CAB and a lady from there rang A&L who then changed their story to say that they had only withdrawn my access!
I contacted the fos who found in my favour and they had to pay compensation.

Get another account opened asap and stop all payments going into the A&L one . Phone the FOS first thing tomorrow and tell them what has happened and that you now have no money at all and see if they will speak to A&L.

They have to give you 30 days notice that they are going to do this.

    Good luck
  • Thanks for your help. They stated they had written to me on the 9th November (which they havent') so that still doesnt give 30 days anyway and they have written to me since about my account and let me set up a DD last week. I have an appointment on the 11th with the CAB but I have a another dormant bank account anyway so will have wages paid into that, I'm not going to give them a penny more and will write to the FOS, its a disgrace that I got paid on Friday and cant access my money - surely thats theft?!!!
