  • i also have just recieved £200 compensation from A&L for them closing my account after i won my bank charges back - i went throught the FOS who bounced it back to me and said go through A&L official complaints process first which i did and hey presto! takes the sting out of my bank charges case with barclays being stayed:mad:
  • Not closure of Bank account story, but, I have noted that A&L, MBNA and the Co-op against whom I have been successful in winning back credit card late fee charges show on their statements that I have no credit available even though the facility available to me is considerable. I would call this credit card closure.

Account was not closed by Natwest - they put a default on my credit rating for no reason. I will be taking them to court if necessary.
  • i claimed back £2300 from halifax they offered me £1800 which i accepted.within days they paid the money into my account they have not closed my account as yet but do not honour direct debits let me set new ones up or let me pay with my debit card so at the mo they are making it hard for me
they would have better off closing my account
  • i claimed back £1800 from halifax they have not closed account at mo but canx all my dds will not clear chqs or let me pay with my debit card
they are making it hard for me

  • Has anyone complained about this and had any success? I made my original complaint about the Nationwide and their decision to close my account after successfully reclaiming bank charges which accrused on a current account when I was unemployed.

My complaint went to the FOS in May but has so far not been allocated to a case worker. I was wondering if anyone else has complained over a similar aciton, what he outcome was, and what the timescale was from the FOS?

Oh, and I had a similar situation with Smile where they didn't close an account but prevented me from using it for direct debits (so effectively useless as I couldn't pay my mortgage with it!). Has anyone tried making a complaint on that basis?
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!
  • Advice appreciated .... my current account held with Lloyds TSB had an authorised overdraft of £1,500. Following a fairly lean time last year, I contacted my bank and asked for some leeway in clearing the overdraft. Subsequently, charges amounting to more than £900 have been applied, taking the overdraft from a manageable £1,000 to £1,900, ie: £400 over my overdraft limit. In September, I wrote to the bank querying these charges and was fobbed off with various delaying tactics. In the meantime, I started to clear the overdraft as best I could, making weekly payments from my business account to my personal account online. I finally received a verbal authorisation to continue making these payments, which I did up to the beginning of December. Then, suddenly, just before Xmas, an online payment I made was returned to my business account. I queried this with my branch, having tried to make the payment again and again it being returned. I was told the branch could find no record of my account and passed me to Debt Recoveries. I called them and was told much the same thing. Despite several further calls, no-one seemed able to tell me (a) why my payments were not being accepted and (b) where my account had gone. Yesterday, I had a very aggressive lady on the 'phone from Apex Debt Recovery and I now understand that my account has been closed by Lloyds TSB and the "debt" or overdraft as I understood it to be, of some £1,700 has been passed to them for collection in full. Can a bank just close your account without any notification to the account holder, especially at a time when I had been led to believe that my proposals to repay my overdraft had been accepted and what do I do now about the £900 of charges that I had disputed with Lloyds TSB?
  • I have an account with Halifax which is only a Cardcash Account. My credit rating is expremely poor and I will not get another account if they close this one during a claim process in the future. What experience does anyone have of their policy to close accounts if a claim is made ?

I'm very nervous of losing my account, but have about £2000 of charges to reclaim. Please HHHHHHEEEEEELLLLLPPPPP !!!

If they close your account, the FOS will make them pay you compensation. You should be able to open another basic bank account elsewhere, even with a poor credit rating.
