  • Just got a letter today from the Alliance and Leicester telling me that they are closing my account in a month. They say that, although they coughed up, they are not liable, nor is it a sign of weakness and since I can't seem to accept their terms and conditions they are closing my account as of the 10th January 2007. Can I please return any cheque books. What did I receive in the same post? yes, you guessed - a new cheque book.

I took them to court a second time and their 28 days is up today. Off to court we go.

Luckily I have another account with Intelligent Finance.
  • I use to bank with the CO-OP and was there customer from when I went Bankrupt till around 2004 when they closed my account.

I had around 4 bounced Direct Debits which where the fault of AOL and a serious lack of communication. The CO-OP didn't try and charge but wrote to me about them.

Then one day out of the blue they gave me 28 days to find an alternative bank and closed it.

I argued the case with them but they didn't have any of it.

To be honest they really p***ed me off and I am still mad about it now...

That is against the banking code. You have to have 30 days notice in writing. Complain!

What your forgeting is the Banking Code is a voluntary code and certainly not legaly binding. Actually going over your agreed limit is strictly fraud (if it's your fault), this is the same as knowingly getting extra money from a cash machine and not reporting it.

You break the terms of the agreement (going over your agreed limit), bank has the complete right to close your account!

I understand that bank charges can appear unfair, but don't lambast them for closing your account, when after all it is you that has broken the agreement, not the bank!
  • Quick question - I have closed some of the accounts that I wish to reclaim charges from and then opened up new basic accounts with the same organisation. Can the bank in question, (the Co-Op) close the new accounts if they choose to?

Can a bank or building society basically choose to close your account if they decide they no longer want to deal with you, regardless of how your account has been conducted?

    Many thanks

    Yes, it’s a free country!

You can change banks as you please, equally the bank ask you to take your business elsewhere. They cannot discriminate on grounds of sex or race; but on commercial grounds, they can decide, they do not want to do business with you any longer. (They have to give you 30 days notice, unless fraud is involved.)

Any retailer can ask you to shop elsewhere, any doctor can strike you off his/her list.
  • I was transferring money between the TSB and Alliance and Leic when my screen went blank . When I came back on line ,I checked if the 6,000 pounds transfer had gone through , and it hadn't , so I put through another 6,000 . It then transpired that the original payment HAD gone through and that the second DD transfer had been returned because of insufficiant funds . The TSB then charged me 70 quid for an unpaid DD . Today ,I am about to open a new account with HSBC , close down my TSB accounts , transfer my ISA'S because the TSB refuse to drop the 70 pound fee . By the time the fee is to be claimed ie. jan 2nd 2007 I will have no accounts with the TSB . I have seen my branch manager and written to the area manager ( still waiting for a reply )--- but I dare not let it drag on till jan 2nd ,because it will be harder to get the money back . DON'T LET THEM TAKE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE . Let THEM fight YOU to get the money , instead of the other way round .
  • Alliance and Leicester closed my account. I was charged £70 for being £3 overdrawn so I sent the usual letters asking for my money back. They refused so i went on moneyclaim online and Alliance and Leicester sent a very rude letter saying that they reluctantly agreed to pay the charges but that they were in the right and that given the fact that i didn't comply with their terms and conditions they would be closing my account in 3 weeks time! To be honest they've behaved pathetically over the whole thing - good riddance to abd rubbish if you ask me!!

Yes, they should forward you a cheque. I've no idea how long this may take though. I'd give them 14 days and if you haven't received it then write to them and ask for it immediately.
