Before I was rescued by my Born-Money-Saver partner I was regularly being charged by HSBC because I couldn't pay the charges they'd imposed on me the previous month for being unable to pay the charges from the month before. You get the picture. So obviously I'd like to claim (not least in order to pay back the boyfriend!)
BUT I have a large (11k) loan with HSBC. Has anyone been in the position where they were asked to close ALL accounts with their bank (i.e. loans as well) or does it seem to be just the account which you are querying that they get shirty about?

    Thanks for any help!

No they cannot close your loan account down, this is a seperate credit agreement, dont worry.
Any spelling mistakes are entirely on purpose to check you're paying attention :p

Will Nationwide definitely close your account or is there some people who have regained charges and kept their account?
They closed the Nationwide account that I regained charges from..

Havent said anything about my other accounts/Savings with them tho (which had no charges)

  • I have!
Co-Op bank charged me £39 for going 3p overdrawn, I complained in branch, the manager agreed to refund the charge but took my card off me, cut it up and closed my account immediately.

That is against the banking code. You have to have 30 days notice in writing. Complain!

  • Alliance & Leicester have wrote to me telling me they are going to close my account because I claimed back £300.

  • I would like to go ahead and claim the money back which the bank has taken off me over the years, but am worried that they will close all my accounts and make me pay everything back. I have a student account with a large overdraft, a current account and a credit card with money on all with LloydsTSB. There is no way I can afford to pay the overdraft or the credit card back at the moment, do Lloyds close peoples accounts after claiming? :/
  • Hi, I recieved a statement from the Nat West about a month ago showing that they had closed my account, they also took a small amount out of the account on closing it towards a debt they say I owe, this took place following my trying to get charges removed and asking the bank manager to look at my account !!
I am now in a situation where I have no bank account, I tried to open a cahoot basic account yesterday online but was refused - explanation - "I did not pass the credit check"
Does this mean the Nat West has done something to prevent me opening an account anywhere else ? I do not want to make things worse by trying to apply elsewhere and making credit scores even worse ?
I had banked with the Nat West for approx 14 years, I know I never made a fortune to pay in, and guess I was never looked upon as a big money earner (as a freelance, payments are erratic and I don`t earn much.
My nightmare began last year(2005) when following being charged for going £17.00 overdrawn the bank piled on charges month on month amounting to them demanding £381.00 by Nov this year, despite me trying to sort this out with them (Branch manager and Nat West credit management services) they have continually refused to remove the charges, closed my account and are threatening legal action !! The account was originally a free First Reserve account for years and I have always been good with it. following my request for a Switch card due to problems using Solo to buy fuel at the garage I need to use on route to work I was told by a Staff member at my local branch that I could only have Switch if I changed to another account with them, and further to asking if this facility was free I was told yes. I agreed only to find later that it would cost me £10.00 per month (they say I must have been told and say I must have signed and agreed to this (I was shown the agreement showing my signature !!) I may seem naive and am far too trusting, I wouldn`t have signed knowing about the £10.00 charge as I don`t earn enough to pay a regular £10.00 fee, but it seems I didn`t read the contract properly so they have got me there !! - though no excuse - I am dyslexic and suffer bad memory, so feel cornered / embarrassed / confused (not after sympathy just help) :)
I have a cheque from some work I have recently done but cannot pay it in anywhere,
Please forgive me if this post is not in the correct forum.
Can you advise me regarding Bank Charges and how to turn my cheque into cash as I am really broke and need the money -
    Kind regards.

  • I feel for you! Banks can be horrible. I think you may be abe to open an account like the Post Office one, which just allows you to pay in and take out - no credit facility, so no credit check to fail. You cant make direct debit payments from this sort of account, or get an overdraft, as far as I know, but it would be a start. Try advice from someone like CAB, they must had this problem lots of times. Dont go to the sort of cash bureau that advertises that they cash cheques, they will charge loads. Go ahead and claim your charges back - Martin's steps are easy to follow and the letters are written for you. Good luck!

I would like to start proceedings with Lloyds Bank but have a loan with Loans Direct (also a Lloyds company) my concern is that if I am successful they will call in the loan. Would be grateful for any help.
  • I have successfully claimed back charges from the RBS - just by ringing my local branch, pointing out that I have been a customer for x years, that both me and my huby bank there - and listing the accounts we have - and that it would be a shame for us to take all this business elsewhere. On the other hand I one of my friends had to get really stropping to get her NatWest to refund her £2 - in the end they gave her £1 and it was "take it or leave it" - I told her to vote with her feet via the Ombudsman.......
But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green :D
  • My main bank is Natwest I have just added up the charges, i am apprehensive about claiming them if Natwest close the account thereafter. Are there any known cases of Natwest closing accounts once they have paid out?
