has anyone complained to the financial services ombudsman about bank accounts being closed?

i will deffo complain if abbey tries to close my account - i mean, what grounds could they use as an excuse to close my account?
  • Err - it's a free country and they can choose to do business, or not, with whoever they like?

I don't think you can have it both ways. If it was the other way round and someone was suing you (rightly or wrongly) would you want to do business with them again?????

I'm in the process of claiming from Nationwide and they did send a letter stating that if I could not operate within the terms and conditions i signed up for (even though I stated they are illegal!) that I should find banking elsewhere!

I have to say agree with this...
Littlewoods catalogue - won back charges of £300 by default.

All opinion/help/interpretation is given totally impartially and is not intended to be taken as financial advice in any way, all final decisions must be your own. Good luck!
  • Before I was rescued by my Born-Money-Saver partner I was regularly being charged by HSBC because I couldn't pay the charges they'd imposed on me the previous month for being unable to pay the charges from the month before. You get the picture. So obviously I'd like to claim (not least in order to pay back the boyfriend!)
BUT I have a large (11k) loan with HSBC. Has anyone been in the position where they were asked to close ALL accounts with their bank (i.e. loans as well) or does it seem to be just the account which you are querying that they get shirty about?

    Thanks for any help!

I suggest you ask for your money back and when they say no rather than sue complain the Financial Services Ombudsman/Banking Ombudsman (whatever it is these days) and I would expect your complaint to be upheld. This way the chances of the bank calling in the loan might be diminished.

It's scandalous the way banks behave.

What about running your account not properly?

I have a neighbour who claimed her charges back. The bank did not close the account at this point. But, silly her, six weeks later, she bounced another DD. So the bank said: “Up with this, I will not put!”

Yes I did over two years ago, regarding NationWide Current account. I as overdrawn by £232 plus I had a Credit Card with them, This was also over the limit through the charges. I was earning enough money to keep my head above water but the charges they kept throwing at me meant that I was always going over my limit again. NationWide close my account following my pay going in which meant that after all the charges were applied I owed them £100 something. They did not write to me regarding the account being closed. I wrote to the Ombudsman regarding the way I was treated by them, the fso wrote to me regarding Nationwides reply, and told me that nationwide thought it was the best solution to the given situation i was in, and that was to close the account to prevent any further charges being applied, funny how it was thier charges that kept putting me overdrawn on my overdraft. My original overdraft was £500, i brought that down to £200 over a period of two months, and then i and the bank was going to reduce the overdraft to zero in the following two months, if the charges had been spreed over the same period then it would not have been a problem. I was also constantly phoned my nationwide to increase my limit on my card of which i did not do, so i think banks have more to answer for then they care to think. Thay love you when they see you as a patential victim, then when they can no longer suck money from you, they throw you out of the door, I feel that banks operate illegaly and constantly and thats how they make good profits from someones bad situation. the fso felt that they acted in intentions :rotfl:
  • When I was in debt, and had my current account closed, I had to open a basic account, I went to loyds tsb, for over a year I had no problems with the bank until I went to withdraw money inside the bank not from the cash point, it was a thursday and I wanted £8 from my account until the next day for payday, only to be told that I was not allowed to take money out unless I have a debit card, not a cash point card, since when are loyds allowed to refuse the account holder to withdraw any money from their accounts, is this allowed?
