I received the statements from NatWest and worked out that I can reclaim £890 from them, but I'm still concerned about the possibility of them closing my account and asking me to pay back the 2K overdraft. I know Nationwide closes accounts but have there been any cases of NatWest doing the same thing? My account is a student account

what will happen to funds in an account if it is closed down following a successful claim against your bank?

secondly, what will happen to any savings accounts i have with the bank if they close the current account?
Unless the savings account has to be linked to a C/A what reason would there be to close, as no lending is involved?

Stated today that they will not seek to close accounts, even if you take them to court for unfair charges and win :-)
Told to me verbally over the phone.
A fair policy, indeed, but policy will surely not prevent individual decisions.

I don't know. I was thinking if they closed the current as i'd claimed against them, they may no longer want my custom at all. Hence the question.

I have read as much as i can but making sure all corners are covered...

I have just claimed back £1,674.00 from halifax over 4 1/2 years. No mention of closing my account, plus I also got a credit card with them that is on the max at the moment. They only outlined the following on the letter " If I should fall into any charges in the future or do not use our account as it should be ran then they will close it automatically ".

    Hi

I have a dormant account with First Direct which I believe I have in the region of £600 worth of fees that they owe me. However, I am also in OD with them to the tune of £900. I know that I can pay off anything remaining, so that is not a problem. However, I also have an account and various other services with HSBC, which I opened after my FD account went dormant. My question is: will FD pass on the fact that I have reclaimed charges to HSBC as they are in the same group? If so, will HSBC ask me to close my account, and will it affect my ability to get a mortgage etc. with them in the future?

    Ta!

I would be astonished if the communication in such a large organisation is good enough to achieve that. I work for one of the large banks and don't think we'd manage that!

Yesterday I received my 28 days notice that HSBC are to close my account as I claimed £1800 a few months ago in charges.
  • I'm looking to claim £425 from HSBC. I've read through the whole of this post and only found two instances where HSBC have closed accounts - does this mean they do depending on the situation or are people not posting about it?

Also if I go ahead and they do close my account - do they just close the account I claim on or do they close my credit card and flexi loan as well?

    Cheers

No one can say for certain whether your account will be closed.

For initial claims HSBC don't seem to close accounts as routinely as some other banks, but this is a general observation based on cases I have seen.

If you claim a second time, HSBC are much more likely to close the account, most closures I have seen for this bank are after a second claim.

If you are up to date with payments on your credit card and loan, they should not be affected as they are covered under seperate agreements.
  • Abbey refunded me £575 3 months ago and my acocut has no been closed even though i have no savings in it.

However i have heard stories of people who use Abbey having their accounts closed.
