When I was in debt, and had my current account closed, I had to open a basic account, I went to loyds tsb, for over a year I had no problems with the bank until I went to withdraw money inside the bank not from the cash point, it was a thursday and I wanted £8 from my account until the next day for payday, only to be told that I was not allowed to take money out unless I have a debit card, not a cash point card, since when are loyds allowed to refuse the account holder to withdraw any money from their accounts, is this allowed?

After a trip to pay my wages into my Halifax account yesterday, the assistant informed me that as of the 17th February anyone with a visa electron card can't use any services at the counter. So I asked what if I needed to with draw a large sum of money ( have got a few house improvements jobs to be paid for in the next few months!) to which she replied I have a £300 a day limit at the ATM machine!!!! I find this absolutely rediclous that I am going to be penalised for going through a 'rough' financial period a few years ago and therfore not able to have a switch account! Surely I should be one of there best customers with the amount of money the have had over the last few years in charges! But not any longer, yesterday was the final straw and the first letter was sent of this morning to reclaim all the 'unlawfull' charges.
I would also like add that I am totally addicted to this forum already (after only 24 hrs!) and its fantastic to read so many success stories, it has really given me the confidence to fight this to the death!!!!!
  • I mentioned in the success stories last week on a settlement I was offered last week from the Royal Bank of Scotland. I replied to them accepting this offer. I then tried to check to see if they had credited my bank account through the internet banking service. I was informed that they did not have my details. I then went to the nearest hole in the wall to check my balance, the card was swallowed up with the message that it was not an authorised card.
I telephoned the department that sent me the correspondence to be informed from them that I had to phone my branch. I phoned my branch who informed me that my account was closed and gave me another number to phone which was the recovery office. I phoned them to enquire what they were playing at. The telephonist was not at all helpful, and eventually told me that they would issue me with a cheque. I will be phoning that department every 2 days until the cheque is through my letterbox.
SO BE PREPARED TO BE GIVEN THE RUN-A-ROUND!!!

Well the thing is I am in dispute with RBS at the mo aswell. I had a biz account with them 2 years ago, and when I sold my buisness i went into branch to close the account. But they didnt close the account down because unknown to me a cheque was due to be paid which left the account overdrawn by £18. I only found out about this about 6 weeks ago because RBS ( BEING AS CLEVER A BANKS ARE!) had been writing to me at my business premises which I obviously no longer owned!!!!!! The account has amounted more than £700 in charges, luckily they are goingto refund them without me having to go through the procedure quoted here on MSE, but don't think they will be very reluctant to give me another account!
I have been told that Abbey are ok to get a basic electron account with and if you manage your account well for 6 months they will upgrade, it would be happy to hear if anyone has had any experience of this before I go in on Saturday!
Thanks for the advice though Shaun x
  • I am planning to reclaim about 7K in bank charges from HSBC.

My wife also banks with them and we have one shared account. If they close my account and our shared account will they also close her personal account?

    Any feedback welcome.

    Thanks
  • II am in the process of getting a small amout of charges back from the Nationwide. I started this before I became aware of this web site.
I do not want to have my account closed as I have up to now been very happy with the way the staff have treated me. I believe however, that the Nationwide have handled my account very badly and will take legal action against them if they close my account stating that I have handled my own account badly!!!
They were notified in writing that I was touring abroad but they returned my direct debit account for motor insurance because there was insufficient funds in my account for a half day period .
I would like to hear from any one who has challenged this bank accounts closure, but not through going to the financial Ombudsman.
I have had considerable experience of other Ombudsman and its a waste of time!!!
  • Received a letter from Norwich & Peterborough Building Society this morning saying as a 'goodwill gesture' they are prepared to repay 50% of the £139 I'm reclaiming from them in bank charges, but only after they close my account on March 2. Some goodwill!

I've immediately started court proceedings against them and now want to complain to the Financial Ombudsman about their appalling behaviour - is it worth doing?

Sorry, I don't think my original post was very clear. I'm DEFINITELY taking them to court but am wondering if it is worth also reporting them to the Financial Ombudsman - does this body have any power to take action against them?

Also, the building society in question is demanding that I repay my entire overdraft (over three grand) before they close my account on 2 March. If I can't do this, what are my options?
