Has your bank closed your account?

  • Loans with your bank

As I've just cleared my overdraft with NatWest, I am now considering whether I can reclaim some of these charges. However, I am concerned about having my account closed.

I also have a sizeable loan with NatWest. If they close my account will they ask for the loan to be repaid?
  • PLEASE DONT MERGE THIS THREAD WITH NATIONWIDE - IT NEEDS TO BE ON THE FRONT PAGE !!!!!

Submitted claim to Nationwide and received a nasty letter saying they are closing my JOINT account with my partners name on the letter also!

Sent a letter in explaining that it was for MY account only. Rang up one guy, he said no problem they will sort it and joint WONT be closed.

Rang again as I wasn't so sure - another guy said they are within their right to do so, and they are closing my joint also.

They actually refunded me £0.05 in charges, and £30 to cover costs (into joint). This was his explanation, as because they had used the JOINT account to refund court fees etc, they were going to close it. Funny thing is, I have not received anything saying they will close MY own account, which the claim relates to?

I will wait for the outcome of the letter - if any.

Just be careful if your'e in the same boat - open new accounts elsewhere and be careful.

    Regards
    Maz.
  • My boyfriend's account was closed on the 30th November without any warning. The funny thing is he only sent the 1st letter asking for his statements he never mentioned anything about claiming bank charges. He was also £1,200 overdrawn they just cleared it we still haven't had a letter why it had been closed. I've just sent a the 2nd letter asking for his charges to be refunded so I can't wait to see there reply I bet £500 that they wont give them to him because they cleared his overdraft.

What do you think can they do that?

    PS The bank was Halifax
  • I claimed back from HSBC and they haven't closed my account.
  • I reclaimed my charges from Nationwide and received a letter on 15th Feb to advise me that the money had been refunded. I received £270, plus £30 costs directly into my account.

Today I received a letter from Nationwide saying that as I am unable to conduct my account within their terms and conditions I have 30 days to make alternative arrangements and bank elsewhere.

Can I fight this at all?

  • Having just read this entire thread what I find very interesting is the way the banks are continually manoeuvring to get around the problem, which we know is of their own doing.

Firstly, they refused claims. Until people started winning the court cases.

Then they started fobbing people off with derisory offers, until that stopped working.

Then they started closing accounts because people weren't working "within the terms and conditions" (neither were the banks). Now that FSO has put the kibosh on that too.

And now it seems the tactic is to refer (sell) the debt to debt collectors. Although one customer did recently take his own bailiffs to the bank!!

I'm only gutted that I can't join the fight. The best financial move I made...was to marry a chartered accountant!!:T
  • From reading some of the threads it seems that nationwide are sure to close flex accounts after claiming. But do they close credit card acc and saving acc?
I have all 3 with them and although I have opened a parachute acc with Lloyds, I opened my nationwide acc so that I didn't have a lot of charges when I was abroad and reading Lloyds stuff they just love to whack on those charges for using credit cards and withdrawing money abroad.
Has anyone left it awhile and then tried to open a new flex, credit card with nationwide??
Or does anyone know of a good acc for use when abroad?
  • Woolwich will close down your account, I'm going out in a few mins to open a new account so I can claim my bank charges back, but my sister is having to take them to court as they are now ignoring her letters.

hi all, new to this board...just worked out that Barclays have taken just over [inclusive of interest] £4000 over the past six years. Problem is that i have an overdraft of £1000 [to the limit] and a loan account that is currently just under £5000. I am just wondering that if i submit this request for return of monies, am i likely to have to pay back all of this debt...i can pay the overdraft if they close the account, but certainly not the loan amount...

    many thanks in advance,

The loan is an entirely separate matter. Presuming the loan account is up-to-date, there is no need to worry.
The bank cannot break the existing agreement unilaterally.

If you are behind with your payments, then you have broken the contract already and it becomes a different ballgame.
The bank might well say: “No more!”
