Pink, I think it takes lots of practice to get the slicing right!

I think it helps to make sure that you aren't pressing down on the loaf and let the knife do the work with nice, big movements.

I've spent a bit of time playing with my fastbake over the past couple of days. The only real difficulty I'm having is cutting it....I have a decent carving knife but I think I must be a bit coq eyed as my slices seem to be thin at one end and thick at the other. :o Does anyone think it's worth investing in a slicer like the one Lynz linked to here?

    yep! me!!!
But then that's not surprising, cos she posted that link in reply to my post!

Thanks Chipps....does that one look big enough to slice a MR loaf?

I'm so tempted! My erratic slicing is the only thing putting me off replacing shop bought bread completely with homemade.

It looks scary to me! I'm thinking of putting an electric knife on my Christmas list - would anyone recommend it?

    Yes, definitely!

We got three as wedding presents (23 years ago) and gave two away. The one we kept died recently, and I'm definitely going to replace it as Mr Pink can't seem to get the hang of carving the Sunday roast with an ordinary knife.....he sort of shreds it! :(This is the one I'm thinking of buying.

I've no idea how good they are with bread though. :o

Carrie, don't worry if it looks a bit small, the french loaf and the sandwich loaf that I made were smaller than I expected.

The basic (with seeds) that I did on the timer, looks like the best so far! It had me worried for a bit because it was actually hitting the roof of the bread maker for a while! Just waiting for it to cool and then I'll do the bit I dread....slicing! :o I'll edit this post to let you know how it compares with the other two taste wise.

Edit: The basic loaf not only looked the best and was the bigest (19 slices) but tasted almost as good as the sandwich loaf........definitely the all round favourite so far!

I made a fastbake loaf last night, first fastback I have done as I usually use the normal setting.

It was very stodgy and we had to throw it away.

I wonder what I did wrong? Too much water, too little flour? We followed the recipe correctly too.

    Will try again tonight :(

    Hi Heather,

I don't know if you did anything wrong because I haven't tried a fastbake yet, but from reading through the threads on OS it seems like most people think the fastbake setting compromises too much on the taste/texture and produces a 'cake like' loaf.

Yes, I will stick to what it says in the book but try different settings.

Won't be using that setting again!
