Can anyone tell me how I get the right water temperature?

Hello can we join in? I say we as my husband is the one who's done the bread baking so far.
We had a Fastbake for a wedding present and so far he's made a fresh basic white every day. I find it a little sweet though - a 2 pound loaf having 3 tablespoons of sugar in it according to the recipe. He says it says the sugar is necessary for rising and a crusty loaf. Is that much sugar really necessaryAnyone experimented with reducing sugar?
p.s. We also had a food processor and various other necessary kitchen items meaning I think we can join Old Style properly. Day one of the first week after delivery was pasta with home cooked pasta sauce and day two was home made soup with home made breadI live in my own little world. But it's okay. They know me here.0 -
Try laying your loaf on its side, and then cut it sideways if you see what I mean.0

Hi
What I do is use 2/3 of the required measure in cold water and add 1/3 measure boiling water. It seems to be suitable.
Hope this helps.;)0 -
Heatherw, don't worry too much about water temperature, just needs to be slightly warm - too hot, and you kill the yeast.0

Can you provisionally allocate me a membership numberAT the FOURTH time of asking, I think LX have finally given up to my persistence and have sent me an order confirmation :j :j :j

woooo hoo :T about time too TNG
Mind you I have managed to polish off almost a whole pack of butter to myself since the MRFBBM arrived so am fattening up for Xmasevery cloud & all that
when was it confirmed? Have you been out and bought your yeast/ flour/ etc for the prep?
INcidentally, I have been thinking about using an old very thin pillowcase for storing my bread in - mind you it only lasts for a few hours so I guess its fine
Also Pink, have you got any old mobile phones anywhere, I found one yesterday & ill get 2.19 ( it is that old!) for it in argos vouchers, ( via envirofone) which reduces the cost of the electric knife to a fiver :money::beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
Tried the bread with 1/2 the sugar (1 1/2 tablespoons for a 2 1b loaf) and it was fine
Couldn't taste the sugar any more. That loaf was slightly less crusty but I prefered it.
It was ds (13) who made that one and he was really pleased I preferred his version
Next onto experimenting with seeds although I quite fancy the chocolate bread as well .......... not that I've personally made one at all yet but I suppose the novelty will wear off for everyone else at some pointI live in my own little world. But it's okay. They know me here.0 -
