After reading this thread I was parked outside a hospital today waiting for my daughter and noticed 4 people including an Ambulance driver all smoke and throw their cigarette butt on the pavement, one of them actually did it in front of a policeman and policewoman who were waiting outside but they just carried on chatting.

not sure whats worse, them chucking the butts away or smoking in the ambulance - going back to station - finishing their shift then the person who gets in it afterwards to decontaminate it finds the cigarette butts chucked in the ambulance, along with chewing gum, banana skins, discarded plastic coffee cups (not always empty) squashed drinks cans etc etc, and maybe if we are lucky a one pence piece.....

Ahh now Mr Custard...i can see now why you have become a little how should i say irate, you are an ex postie.

Maybe i should clear up a wee matter for you, this i believe although no doubt you will go on to proove me wrong has been covered on this website before, and that is posties leaving there elastic bands on the floor.I feel and i dont quite know why that i must claify the issue, that being that you may have been an excellent example of a postperson,im sure that you delivered you letters on time, without delay and with the odd whistle as you went about your day.

Unfortunately most of your ex co/workers did not have the diligence that you had,im quite sure that you kept your laccy bands and put them in the bin, however i am going by what i see on most days and there is an abundence of the bands littering the pavements in the area in which i live.

as you quite rightly highlighted that im sure that not all post people of this great land dispose of there bands in a manner in which would irritate the most staunch of eco minded,i was merely refering to the postie in my area who in matter of fact is a really decent sort of chap,if not tardy on some days but im sure that it is of no fault of his own.

Thankyou for highlighting in red for me,but alas i fear your time was wasted as i am colour blind, which is why i said redish coloured bands, thank the lord that the wife was here to point out for me your oh so considerate use of colour.

I am of course thankful that we still have a useful and viable postal system in this country,oh by the by the posties that you know of that have been fined for dropping bands....well littering is littering.

I also know of one who got fined for leaving a bag of D2D items undser a pouch box as there was no room inside
    the bands get everywhere
hence why our old washing machine died after constantly getting rubber bands stuck in its its motor
do you think i just bunged them in the machine out of laziness?
and in a rather strange move.RM have just brought out new uniform where the trousers have very shallow pockets.
so anything in those pockets will be at risk of falling out.
its getting to the point where you have 2 posties delivering for 5 hours
thats a lot of bundles and a lot of bands
i notice yet again you are generalising all staff there.

Your last comment is irrespective of anything to do with anything! I am indifferent of peoples opinions, and yes they are allowed to give them, at the same time it is my choice if I choose to listen or agree.

The number of question marks was only put there as I was so stupid and dumb (yes I am admitting to this) that I did not perceive this as littering. I was suprised at it, as I said, I have never even heard of people getting fines for dropping things like takeaway wrappers!

I was just shocked due to my ignorance, and if anything it is a shame it has had to come before Christmas but it's our own fault for being so naive. I am not suprised you can get fined for it, I just didn't think they did!

Well if you are not listening to other people's opinions and posts it begs the question as to why you are getting so worked up about their comments?

I'm not getting worked up, I am just expressing my opinion. I think some of these people are more concerned over their personal comfort and gains than the real issue here which is saving the planet.
  • As someone that got a small burn from someone throwing a cigarettebut out of their car window, whilst I was cycling, I am glad they started to fine people that dispose of cigarette buts (or any other litter for that matter) on the public roads/pavements.
  • Personally I'm not really bothered *to the point that it would annoy me/wind me up*about where people flick their fags. SOME people are just lazy and would rather chuck their rubbish on the floor, then walk 5 steps to the bin. You can provide people with bins, personal ashtrays etc, but i'm pretty sure there will be somone wanting to hone their flicking skills! lol
The only thing that annoys me about smokers and smoking in general, are the people who smoke outside the doors at a hospital, especially next to the womens ward.
Bringing my new born baby outside to be greeted by pregnant women and visitors blowing smoke practically in our faces is not the most pleasant of experiences.

But anyway...thank you OP...my friend flicks her fag out of the window when driving, so 'ill be sure to warn her, as I guess you never think it's the kind of thing that you will get caught for!

Saving the planet? Youv'e lost me. Sorry but cant make any sense out of that last sentence. I thought this was about warning people they could face a fine for littering which you've done.

Although I will reiterate I think more people should face fines for dropping litter.
  • peirced princess - that is really horrible that they smoke right in the way of everyone, that's not right at all and I thought hospitals banned smoking apart from in far away hut things!

Gregg - Yes it is warning people not to get fined. The fine is under the environmental act, not anything else. This law is to protect the environment, not pander to people who dislike the habit and think it should be banned altogether.
  • I think you all need to get off your high horses and stop being unreasonable to the OP, it is something that everyone does and there are much worse "crimes" in this world??

Am i the only one that gets scared that if i throw my cigarette butts in the bin i will start a fire and get arrested for arson? I usually chuck my butts beside a bin if there isnt a ash tray in the top of the bin...

It is quite sad that people feel so strongly about a petty thing like ciggy flicking. Obviously something is wrong in their lives, perhaps something they have no control over, that they have to feel so passionately about smokers and their butts!

Personally I enjoy trying to flick my ciggy as high and far as possible, unintentionally probably hitting something or someone!

    Sorry in advance.
    :-)
I enjoy smoking. I also enjoy flicking my fag as high and far as possible. Away from me.
I am inconsiderate but then again what would you expect from someone who neglects their health and shaves five minutes off their life every time they smoke.

Carp - smoking affects your memory too.

    Bummer :(
