As someone that got a small burn from someone throwing a cigarettebut out of their car window, whilst I was cycling, I am glad they started to fine people that dispose of cigarette buts (or any other litter for that matter) on the public roads/pavements.
Come on - everyone knows that cyclists aren't real people!0 -
Outside the labour ward is a personal pet hate, nothing like seeing someone smoking in their dressing room 9 months pregnant or during labour! I hated walking through their smoke when I was pregnant or later bringing back a new born for check ups.0

I thought it was common knowledge that you can get fined for throwing ANYTHING out of a car window. Well i have always known not too.Mummy of 3 lovely munchkins :smileyhea0

Oh come off it - have you read the OP? OP was complaining that she does not see anyone dropping mcdonalds wrappers being fined thus implying indignation at the fact that they have been fined and yet others get away with dropping litter - that certainly seemed the gist of the post to me and, obviously others on here hence the responses.
OP may well have claimed it was a money saving post but it was also a bit of a moan that others get away with worse despite constant denials to the contrary!
That is why she has got the response she has. And the bottom line is that it is a completely and utterly anti social thing to do in the first place quite apart from being dangerous.0 -
I have to agree with Gregg1 on this one. People DO get caught throwing Mcdonalds wrappers, cig butts, empty cans\crisp packets etc, I have NO sympathy for them. Its not too difficult to dispose of litter responsibly. They are free to throw them on the living room floor or kitchen of their house if they wish.
Its inevitable if you discard litter on the streets enough times, eventually you will get caught and fined. Of course its far easier to track someone down if they are driving a car, but their are wardens tracking the public too. This rule has been going long enough now for EVERYONE to know, if they choose to ignore it, or make pathetic excuses up to justify it, they deserve everything they get.
It makes me wonder how many times the OPs partner has got away with it, and whether or not he has learnt a harsh lesson not to do it again. (although I suspect he will still litter, but consciously do it whilst looking around to see if the coast is clear first).:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

Am knackered so feel free to hurl your accusations in the knowledge I prob wont defend myself.
We went to poundland and bought two in car cigarette cup things. So we have learnt our lesson.
My moan was that I have never heard of anyone getting fined for litter. But if it happens then so be it, I don't know why all of a sudden this thread has been brought back up, other than for people who have so much resentment to come on here rather than actually do something about it to someones face. Easier that way isnt it.0 -
if Edinburgh is anything to go by then they need to hand out more fines

and thankfully they did
http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/topstories/Edinburgh-streets-cleaner-as-litter.5969166.jphe city hired extra environmental wardens last year – beefing up its existing team from 32 to 51 – in order to target people dropping cigarette stubs and chewing gum on the city streets.
The extra investment has seen a sharp rise in the number of £50 fixed penalty notices being issued.
A total of 1,046 have been handed out in the last nine months, compared with 680 fines in the whole of 2008/09.
Another 135 people were handed £60 fines for dog fouling, almost as many as the 139 in the previous 12 months0 -
£600,000 to run it each year, about £50,000 in fines. Unless they are doing a lot of more productive work as well then that is the economics of the madhouse.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

the wardens also deal with a lot of stuff outwith issuing fines.
we are a tourist city and Im happy for them to ramp it up and get heavy with the fines.some areas of the city get in a right state
worse now as the council used to do large waste uplifts for free
now its one a year meaning some folks are more likely to dump stuff(can still drop them off at the council tips free)0 -
Fair play to the OP making this thread. They admitted they were at fault, and shared it with a forum where some members can get a little heated.
Anyway, just adding my 2p's worth.funkycoldribena wrote: »If fag butts dont rot,why arent we knee deep yet?
Actually, they take about 12 years to degrade, and they leach poisons into the soil.
In my last rented place, it was evident that the person above us smoked out of their window & dropped fag butts in our garden. There were new ones appearing there on a weekly basis, but there were also old ones in the soil, some with the faded paper, some just the filter. It was pretty rank, and shows that they dont degrade very quickly at all.0
