  • Hi I wonder if anyone can give me a little advice regarding claiming charges back from the Halifax.

First question. We closed our current account with them July 2006. Can we still claim for charges prior to that date. We were with them for 20 years how many years can we claim?

Second (maybe not correct thread so apologies) I have a business account with HBoS - can you claim charges against them too or does it just relate to individuals and not companies?

    Thanks.

Any pointers to the location of differnt guidance on reclaming charges from business accounts?
  • After many problems with the Halifax I have decided to take the plunge and claim back my bank charges from two accounts I hold with them, and to my reckoning these will total in excess of £3000!!!!!
Just need some advice on the qucikest way to order my bank statements, because after a conversation with one of their advisors I have been informed they do not provide a list of charges that have been applied to an account and I will have to manually go through my statements. Now they informed me I can order the statements over the phone for a cost of £5 PER account and I need advice whether this an acceptable way of recieving the info or should I write to them then they are obliged to respong within the alloted time scale???????
Hope someone can help me with this!
  • With any bank you do personally have to go through the information and list the charges yourself.

If they will do this over the phone at £5 per account that is the same as applying via letter at £10 for the two accounts so I would phone them as you will probably get them quicker.

They have 40 days to give the information.

I sent off my acceptance forms to Halifax accepting £1600 ( i have detailed my whole reclaim story earlier in this thread) on 12th Jan 2007, and after 9 of the 10 working days I was expecting to wait for payment to get in my account I gave then a call (25/1/07) just to chase things up, and they said they hadent even recieved my papers. DAMN it, I didnt use recorded delivery unfortunately, I just popped the pre-paid envelope in the post (silly i know), so whilst on the phone the man said I could fax it to them and then call again to check they'd recieved it in the morning which I did.
So, I called them in the morning (26/1/07) and they confirmed that they had recieved the papers via fax now, although I would have to wait a further 7-10 working days now for payment.
So, after already waiting 10 working days (2 weeks), I now have to wait another 10 working days (2 weeks) to get the money. This has really frustrated me now, as I only accepted £1600, which is £100 odd short of the full amount, and without £300 odd of interest as it was accepted pre-court, as I was hoping to get the cash quicker without dragging it through the court. So it turns out, I'd have probably been paid quicker if I'd have gone through the courts (and would have got more too!), whereas now I'll have been waiting nearly a month to recieve my reduced settlement :(

This just serves as a warning: settling out of court, may not necesarilly mean you get a quicker payout, if thats what you are hoping for by following this path.
REMINDER: Don't forget to make sure you send ALL you communications with the bank via recorded delivery, especially the acceptance papers.

WOOHOO!!!! - just checked my online banking and there is now a £1600 deposit showing (showing as a cash deposit at the moment) that wasn't there this morning. RESULT :money:
  • Hi all,

Im currently in the process of reclaiming bank charges of £1071.00 from the halifax bank. I sent them the first letter on the 7th Jan saying that i believe the charges are unlawful and that i want my money back. They replied with a letter saying they were sorry to hear i was unhappy and would look into it for me. Then yesterday they phoned me and said they believe their charges are lawful and as a goodwill gesture they are willing to offer me £270. Im not happy with this sum so am now looking to take it to the next step.

so my question is, do i send them a letter warning them im about to take them to court, or do i go ahead and start court proceedings via the moneyclaim website?

thanx in advance for any help!

Send the next letter giving warning that you will issue a court claim after another seven days. Add into the letter something like..............

I cannot accept your offer of £270 as full and final settlement of my claim. I will accept this as part payment without prejudice, but I will continue my claim for the balance.
