Our heating is on - but only because our bathroom is downstairs, tacked* on to the back of the house and is brrrrrr cold, so our heating comes on for 30 mins morn and night to warm up the room for ablution purposes!!

*It is attached to the house, but is only single skin bricks and NO insulation.... brr

oh my, i used to live in a house like this, with no central heating at all, just a gas fire in the living room which was the other end of the house (had to go through the kitchen to get to the bathroom). winter mornings were horrible - i'd pull clothes on, run down to turn the immersion heater on, run back to bed for half an hour, then go downstairs to the bathroom, close the door, run the hot water into the bath so the bathroom steamed up and then do my ablutions.. if i didn't i'd have to sit on the loo in the morning and see my breath steam!! brrrrrrrrrr.. never again!

our little ground floor flat now is much better - we've cavity insulation and often the heat from the kitchen, the evening meal, is enough to do us. but we have turned the heating on once or twice, just to warm the flat through. we've found once its warm it retains the heat very well, but once its cold, forget it. you have to turn the heating on. so yes, ours has gone on in the last few days, but only for half an hour at a time!

  • Our fire, which runs the heating, was on from 5o'clock last night, so warm house, and lots of lovely free hot water this morning:j(I haven't had running hot water all summer). It looks like it's going to be getting used more often from now. Hubby works outside in the cold and wet, (and he brings home the logs) and he's on higher ground, so I can't grudge him a bit of heat in an evening.

I'm not buying coal yet though. Hopefully I can hold out on that one until november, even then it'll only be to supplement the logs.

We never put ours on. Or off. It's 'always on'.

It's controlled by an 'intelligent heating control', a Dataterm from www.Warmworld.co.uk (no connection but a satisfied customer for over ten years). It decides when to fire the boiler, be it summer or winter, to keep us warm enough.

It even decides how early or late to fire it in the winter, depending on the weather, to have the house at the right temperature by the time you set, eg 7am. It's saved us a fortune in gas over the years.

And, yes, it did fire up the heating last night and we were glad it did!
  • We dont need ours on yet although I was ill a couple of days ago and popped the heating on because I thought I was shivering with cold,I wasn,t.After 20 mins everyone else was complaining how hot it was so it went off again as I realised I was just ill.
It is getting a little bit chillier in the mornings and DD noticed yesterday morning that her windows were covered in condensation when she woke, hers is the only room not double glazed.
We are closing the heavy curtains at night now to keep heat in and I hope we may be able to go another few weeks without using the radiators. We are lucky as we have 3ft thick stone walls and lots of natural sun heat from the south facing windows.

Not too cold here yet. And as I am by myself - as DS has decided to do a few months at his Dad's - I am just putting on a jumper in the evening. I really don't want to heat the house until I absolutely have to.
