Now I've had several conversations about heating in the last few days and each person has said it is really early to be putting it on, and yet, this thread emerged in October 2006, and August 2007!!

Not put ours on yet and I'm determined not to yet given our gas payment has more than doubled  .

We now have our duvet and two throws on our bed but DD's are still ok with just their duvets. DD1 did say it is getting harder to get out of her nice warm bed in the morning though!

I wear my dressing gown or fleece over my clothes all day as I get really cold, and tend to use a fleece if watching TV.

I very nearly buckled about lunchtime today but the trouble is there is no going back once it's on! I'm aiming for December but perhaps November is more realistic?

I have relented and put on 1 bar on the electric halogen heater, closed all the curtains etc. My back is cold.

Once the front room has warmed up, the heater is going off.

Hot water bottle in the bed tonight and NO heating is being switched on overnight.

Far better to put a jumper on or a thermal vest. You only pay once for such items but you pay all the time the heating is running.

Fact is your bod gets used to an acclimatises to its environment. If your house is bouncing with heat, your bod will expect it all the time.

Yep - the central heating went on this morning. Several weeks later than it did last year - so dont think thats bad. Have just got it on for the morning session only so far - being a mid-terrace house I decided to see what effect I got from my neighbours this year before deciding on whether to have it on for the evening session as well. I figure they have probably been saving money on their bills for years because I've kept my house so warm and I'm not that concerned - as one side is a neighbour one wouldnt choose and the other side neglects their house badly (so it visibly needs a lot of work done on it - which I am taking into account - as mine looks pretty immaculate from outside courtesy of all the money I have spent on it! My house is improving the neighbourhood, their house is doing the reverse - so I'm not going to worry if some heat escapes from their house into mine - I would give them the benefit of the doubt as to maybe they couldnt afford to keep their house up to standard - but they find the money for a car and regular pub visits, so they DO have enough for house maintainence, but choose to spend it otherwise - ;):D ).

I've resisted so far, but not sure how much longer i can hold out!

Luckily my flat is in a converted warehouse with walls that are about 3ft thick stone so retains the heat well and we put in double glazing a few years ago:D

We also only need a single oil heater for the whole flat as only the LR/kitchen needs heated. We are middle floor of 5 so happy to steal neighbours heat;)

Our heating is on all day from 6am to 11pm but since the thermostat is set at 21o the heating doesn't really come on apart from the first half-hour (6-6.30).

Re-insulated the loft last year to about 30cm (12") when it was on BOGOF at B&Q. Result heating stays off most of the time.

We put the duvet back on the bed 2 nights ago. Until then it was a duvet cover and occasionally a single duvet inner across the bottom. The heating isn't on, even though OH is home all day (on sick leave). In fact, we've had the door and windows open most days until now. Oh, and yes, we are in West Yorks. The thing is, this is a very new house, and meets all the current requirements for insulation, etc, and the massive windows are designed to catch any warmth. For the next few weeks it will probably be enough to have the oven on for 20-30 minutes in the evening. It makes me think there is something to be said for newbuilds. If anything, this place is TOO hot. Left to my own devices, I'd have it cooler than this, and that's without any heating.

Yes we have started heating too..... this means having a fire in the kitchen fireplace and also in the woodburner in the living room. I have unearthed the long underwear and winter clothes. We are still using up last year's leftovers of firewood - the new lot is going to be delivered next week. DH can get warm cutting it into stove-size logs! I have also moved my office (I work from home) into a better insulated and easier to heat upstairs room for the winter.

We put our heating on last night, it was pretty chilly and the mornings have been getting chillier. We're in a rental house and the heating has no thermastat on it so we've knocked the timers back to try to keep the cost down a bit.

We've lasted longer than we would have done in the past, there was a dodgy point at the start of September but we persevered!
