my housemate turned it on, guess who turned it off! :p think I'll keep wrapping up with more layers for a while before I turn it on myself

Visions of housemate swanning round in just shorts and a sleeveless teeshirt and turning the heating on;)

It must be difficult if one shares with people who have decided to have a different temperature to what one has decided oneself (I say that having had lodgers in - but I just deferred to them, as they were paying to be there).

I guess the answer to that is: is the other person in trousers/jeans/maxiskirt, wearing a long-sleeved top and cardigan/fleece. If they are and still want the heating on - then it must be put on. In a difference of opinion as to temperature - then the colder person is the one that needs to be deferred to (being cold is miserable and restricts ones activities). By and large - from what I can see as well - men tend to feel warmer than women and those of more "generous" proportions tend to feel warmer than slimmer people (there have been surveys done on both these points - which confirm this).

I think if one wishes to go to bed unnecessarily or sit round wrapped up in a duvet or fleece - then that is one's own choice - but its not something one can impose on people who have decided to just get on with living their life as per normal. I know I would thoroughly resent it myself if I was the other person - though I am someone who in my own home just gets on with life as per normal whatever the outside temperature.

I guess one can take one of two attitudes:

    a. Regarding it as a challenge to use as little heating as possible (the "I'll Beat Those MoneyHungry Power Companies Challenge"). I sympathise - I'm sitting there thinking "Why should those shareholders have MY money? I need it myself."

    b. Regarding it as a challenge to carry on with life as per normal regardless of outside temperatures (the "I'm Darned if Those shareholders/the Government are going to affect my life regardless of the fuel prices they charge Challenge").

I fall into the second camp myself - the "Life Must Go On - and I'll Scream if I'm not being paid enough to live on - Camp".

our heating isn`t on yet and we are doing fine. Indoor temp is 16 and outdoor 7. If the sun comes out then it will warm up the house very well. I have the washing on as I have to dry it indoors and I go by the sun

It is impossible to compare one household with another as we not on a level playing field. eg Scotland and yorkshire v s wales and sussex, new insulated house v draughty old house v snug cottage

I admire those in adverse conditions who are coping without ch

Still not got ours on, although very tempting this morning. Thermometer says 14 degrees

However, kids are not complaining. DH on nights and off to nice warm bed. I will not put it on just for me so once I have taken kids to school I will be busy busy busy!

Ours is now set to come on according to the times set on the controller, but it is still too warm to actually come on.

The gas engineer never did turn up, but I looked up the problem on the Internet - turned out to be stuck thermostatic valves - and I fixed them both myself :D 100% more reliable and free to boot ;)

Mine too!! so why do I feel sooooo cold. OH tells me I'm imagining it and the posh new digital controller MUST be right. So it's another layer for me and sneaky use of the living room fire!!

I was freezing yesterday after I got home from work, me and my sister were snuggled on the couch under masses of old blankets and fleeces. Our mum offered to put the heating on but we wouldn't let her :rotfl: Which sounds like a bit of role reversal!

Thankfully we have an open fire in the back room, which we burn using wood from a tree we cut back (about 3 years ago!) and spare/unwanted wood from my dad's yard, teaming that with the heat from the cooker at night and I don't think we really need the heating on after 6 for awhile yet.

I agree with Kittie, more luck to everyone in worse places who're coping.

OH moaned last night "I'm cold". Put a jumper on I said. He claimed he hadn't got one. But later miracously managed to find one when i steadfastly refused to put the heating on. Feeling very smug at the moment. Don't know how long it will last. My will is strong. His isn't.

I live in south west Scotland ....and yes it is very cold at the moment, but still no heating on. I got my 2 toddlers fleecy sleepsuits and a hot water bottle each and new vests. (all Boots points and primark :T) I also treated my self to a couple of jumpers, and sitting here now in my clothes and fleecy dressing gown. My heart breaks for my kids and I would never see them cold, I have made it into a game and even got a 'sofa duvet' but I cannot afford to put on my storage heating!! I have asked on freecycle for a couple of oil filled heaters but no luck. My house has loft insulation but drafts everywhere, my next task is to block these all up. Hope fully well manage another month before I turn the heating on at low, if not we'll be 3 wee frozen snotters.

Remember not to block too many of those drafts as the house needs to breath. With the constant rain we get in ayrshire you could find yourself with a damp house if you block all the openings, especially in the roof where it needs an airflow to stop structural problems like rot in the timbers.Stale air can help winter viruses linger longer too so a bit of a draft is actually good for you and your house.

  • Central Heating not on yet occasionally we are putting the oil radiator on for a few hours (we don't have a fire/chimney)in the lounge of an evening. Very chilling here today in derbyshire and my house is full of wet washing and with a family of 6 that is a lot of washing :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

If you can make it cheaper do so. If it's not reduced, in Primark, off ebay or free I can't have it

  • I did put my heating on briefly yesterday, my son has a nasty cough and was complaining he was cold - he was fully clothed at the time so I put it on until he went to bed.

I'm off to work soon so I'll be warm at least until we get home!
I won't buy it if I can make or borrow it instead
