Thermostat on low, radiators turned off in hall and spare bedroom and all remainig ones set to 3. I use my heating on an evening mainly it gets so cold here in West Yorkshire. It's just enough heating to take the chill off. Jumpers and socks are a must!

Still no central heating, the wood stove has been on occasionally. It is getting a bit cold and tonight I have guests so I might have a shot of central heating heat, or on the other hand (as I receive my guests in the kitchen) I might make homemade bread so the oven will warm the environment and I do not need CH on! Will report tomorrow...

Love to all, keep up the good OS work, folks!

It's getting colder here. I had originally aimed not to have any heating on until Oct 1st ... I cracked on Sept 30th for 2hrs!

I was out yesterday and when I'd come back DH had had the heating on for an hour too.

But, on the whole, we are not putting it on continuously and attempting to keep the core of the house warm with an open fire, with wood from a tree which we paid a fortune to be cut down last year (dead and dangerous :( ), so whilst it's "free" now, compared to the gas ... v.expensive, LOL.

So, my aim is not to have to set the timer / thermostats until Nov 1st. The boiler is currently switched off as we realised that on our ancient boiler, the pilot light was costing us money even if we weren't heating water or ourselves.

Our boiler is in urgent need of replacing, but our plumber says he is unlikely to be able to do it for another 2 or 3 mths, as "his old ladies" are just putting their CH on and discovering problems and they, of course, are his priority.

  • I gave in yesterday,I had two fleeces on and still felt cold so have turned the hall thermostat to 17 and the heating zapped on it felt lovely.

I've set the timer for the minimum time I think we can manage on and will adjust accordingly. Two of us work shifts and sometimes get up at 5.30 but we'll just have to manage with no heating then as not warming the house regularly for occaisional needs (I always used to have the timer on for 5am 'just in case' I was on an early shift it got terribly warm sometimes and now this seems a waste)

I'm worried about the bill as we changed power suppliers and they set our monthly payments at les than before, (to save us money!) it won't save if we end up with a massive back payment needed though!

This small 1960's built house does seem to be fairly easy to keep warm though, there are some advantages to downsizing after divorce!

  • Oystercatcher,
We just changed supplier and have been given lower payments too, but rather than get into the situation of owing too much, we plan to phone them and ask them to set the payment higher. (I know putting extra into a savings account is better MS but I find it hard to keep track of all the accounts and it's also too easy to raid them in emergencies!) If the original payment is right, then we'll get into credit, and if not, we shouldn't get a huge shock.

We've had the heater on in the boys's room two nights, ours once, and the gas fire once... sitting here at home with vest, t-shirt, jumper, bodywarmer and fingerless gloves!

We haven't turned our heating on yet but it kicks in if it drops below 12. It has kicked in on a few occasions so far - either early morning or late afternoon I've noticed, but doesn't stay onn for long. We have also given in to the fire on about 3 evenings so far in the past couple of weeks but then OH has had a bit of a sniffle so we had an excuse ;) Altho I'm way up north it hasn't really been that cold so far - chilly but not turn-the-heating-on-cold  In the evenings we snuggle in our pyjamas and fluffy dressing gowns and are perfectly snug. Through the day, I've found keeping the odd window open actually keeps the place warmer, especially in the mornings - I guess it lets the damp air diminish?

No heating on yet, although working from home is making it difficult for me, my OH tells me i am cold blooded and i have reinauds so numb feet and hands are quite normal, just numb hands make typing my reports quite difficult. I always have windows or doors open for short periods of the day and am trying to chase the sun around the house!
I have taken to thick socks, warm slippers and will put extra layers on for now, i also make an effort to move around when i get cold, so running up and down the stairs is a good thing to do. I also like to bake and yes that warms the house up really well. Keep warm everyone, cold is painful and irritating.
