The CH is not on but did put the gas fire on last night. Mum was babysitting and didn't want her to get cold.MFW 1/5/08 £45,789 Cleared mortgage 1/02/13

Haven't put the heating on but have an aged Aga so am definitely cheating because it gives a background warmth and I wrap myself around it several times a day! Will light a fire tonight though, as our house faces north and is catching this chilly wind very nicely.0

Exactly. Is there such a thing as sexy fleece?0 -
I'm holding out till the end of October, and buying some nice cheap thermals on ebid.net. Some for the OH as well, to stop him moaning!0

Yes gave in last night and put it on, for it was 7C outside and 14C inside. I had a jumper on but still a bit cold and my hands and nose were freezing!
I don't think Gordons idea of putting on three jumpers works as your hands still get cold, I suppose theres always wooly gloves and a hat!?0 -
We're in a converted building of five flats with us in the only two bed flat on the top floor. Insulated, double glazed, energy efficient boiler and gas fire (or so the landlord tells us. He's a good fellow tho, we've been renting from him for yonks and know him to be honest), but we certainly aren't counting on hot air rising from the flats below us to add to our warmth. The rest of the tenants are single men who are out more than their in so I expect they rarely have the heating on.
We've done everything reasonable and possible to cut our energy usage and still live like 21st century beings. Tho I think fondly of the big wood burning furnace and stove in my parents and grandparents houses back home in Canada. Holy cats, those things really put out the heat. If anything you have to be careful not to use too much wood or your roasting!
However, we're determined to keep the gas bill down so if it means keeping the c/h thermostat on 15 and just using the gas fire in the front for a couple of hours in the evening to keep the chill off, so be it. We have extra duvets and fleece pullovers, wooly socks. We both work hard and I'll be damned if I'm going to spend my free time wrapped in so many layers I can't move or going blue with cold.
Can sympathise. I have some degree of environmental consciousness - so am willing to make reasonable adaptations for the sake of the environment. But I am very well aware that its the 21st Century and that we have a right to be warm enough to live normally. So - I will put a fleece round my shoulders these days - rather than keep a fire on. But there is no question whatsoever of being wrapped in loads of layers or getting too cold. I have acclimated very slightly - so can manage with a slightly lower temperature than I have been used to - but I always apply the "reasonable person" test to absolutely everything in my life. Question - would a reasonable person think it was fair to have a house that is less than 20C. Answer - no they wouldnt. Conclusion - right - its not going to be less than 20C. I'd spend too much emotional energy too if I was cold - in sitting there fuming that I was cold and we should be charged reasonable prices for fuel - rather than focusing on whatever I had actually decided to do. I dont wish to get in the position where I've, say, spent an entire evening reading a book - but nothing much has percolated into my brain, as I've been busily sitting there feeling sorry for myself/angry for being cold.0 -
Crikey!
Judging from the sound of what most of us look like, with socks, fleeces, gloves, throws etc, the population growth in the UK should slow down dramatically next year.
Apart from all looking like Mr Blobby, nobody is likely to disrobe without the heating on.

I`m still off but it is very very definitely cold this evening and I an sitting here in 3 layers plus hm wool socks. I am hoping that the lounge warms up when I put the tv on and shut the door. Its amazing what a difference 2 degrees makes between comfort and cold0

I am all for holding out til Nov 1st, but OH is already grumbling about feeling cold
It has dropped very cold here over the last couple of days, not sure if we will make it to Nov this year, but I am really concerned about the recent increases in fuel costs and what this might mean - am already paying £100 p/m direct debit for Gas & Electric, and I thought I was already careful.
The heating has been switched on at work this week though - 1st October, it comes on needed or not! It's sweltering in our office and I've had to open the windows. It feels like a criminal offence letting all that expensive heat out, but we don't have access to the thermostat and can't adjust the temperature ourselves.Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0
