Is your heating ON or OFF?

I have brought two oil filled radiators from out of the shed so we have one warming up the bedroom (only because our 9 year old is sleeping with me tonight as she is unwell) and the other is in the main room but isn't switched on yet.
I reckon it is cheaper to have a 400w heater set at a half setting than have the whole central heating system on.0 -
Not put ours on yet. Not sure how long we can last though as I have an 11 week old baby and she does wake in the morning with cold hands, even though she's in a 2.5 tog growbag and blanket over the top. I am not aiming to put in on during the day in winter though. Am going to get thermal vests for us all and we'll have to run around to keep warm. Not hard really with a toddler who's always on the go! I am lucky that my mum and my gran knit. Most jumpers for kids these days are cotton and just don't keep them warm.
If I have to relent it may set it to come on for just an hour or so in the morning to warm the house and for an hour round bath time for the kids. I am wearing the jumper I had on all day and I am fine - not cold yet.
Must chase up the company I had come round about getting cavity wall insulation put in......I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knifeLouise Brooks

I live in south west Scotland ....and yes it is very cold at the moment, but still no heating on. I got my 2 toddlers fleecy sleepsuits and a hot water bottle each and new vests. (all Boots points and primark :T) I also treated my self to a couple of jumpers, and sitting here now in my clothes and fleecy dressing gown. My heart breaks for my kids and I would never see them cold, I have made it into a game and even got a 'sofa duvet' but I cannot afford to put on my storage heating!! I have asked on freecycle for a couple of oil filled heaters but no luck. My house has loft insulation but drafts everywhere, my next task is to block these all up. Hope fully well manage another month before I turn the heating on at low, if not we'll be 3 wee frozen snotters.:santa2::xmastree::santa2:0

I put my heating on tonight (my lodger demanded it). I was wondering though. What is a reasonable temperature to set my thermostat at?

My heating went on from the 1st October. I must admit, it's nice waking up to a warm house in the morning!0

20 C. if its just you. With a lodger there (bearing in mind they are paying for warmth) - might need to be 22C.0 -
my housemate turned it on, guess who turned it off!
think I'll keep wrapping up with more layers for a while before I turn it on myself

Depends where your thermostat is situated, and how the other areas are set to it. For example my thermostat is in the hallway (rather too close to the front door:o ) but is usually set at about 18-20. The theory is the heating is weighted that the living room will then be at 20-21 and the bedrooms more like 16. The bathroom is then supposed to be a cosy 22, but I'm sure it isn't:rotfl:
My parents had their thermostat in the living room and used to prefer that set to about 20.
Try starting at around 20 and varying it little by little until you find a level acceptable to you and your lodger. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
Thanks for all the tips. My thermostat is now set at 20. We will see how it goes. I am a bit frustrated as there is no way I would have switched the heating on yet. My lodger does have a good point I guess though. He works all day as a motorbike courier and is very cold. He just wants to then come home and relax in a warm house.0

Tomorrow definitely, as we are having our boiler and CH changed and upgraded this week. It will be finished tomorrow (and me £4800 poorer!) and I am going to have it on for 24 hours for at least two days to get the house really warm. The Mrs has had a thick coat on in the house all week !!!0
