About 6 months ago similiar situation no road works, just a DC that merged into one lane, I drove down RHS and thought something was wrong, drove past what was 2 miles of traffic, WOW where are they going.

Just happened same way I was just they were not using both lanes. If they are not there to be used they wouldent be there.

If you want to que you be my guest but dont screw at me for using the full road as it was designed for.

You can watch me cruise by and save myself some time.

    CYA
    That's a valid point.

In stop-start traffic, it's not always clear that a lane merges into another. The road may bend, signs could be missing or fallen over, or a lane may be marked for a compulsory turn that no-one wants but the markings are not clear until passing most of the queue. Not everyone may know the area as well as you do.

Switching lanes to make progress is taught by advanced driving instructors and to many experienced drivers is perfectly acceptable human nature.

Once it's been realised that a lane change is desirable, it's counter productive to slam on with a car in your boot just so you can join the queue further back. It's kinder to everyone to make the process more gentle. No-one is suggesting that anyone "force" their way in or do anything dangerous, but I find that a careful non-intrusive position, an indicator and a smile work wonders. Ask nicely and you may receive. If someone like darich won't let me in, I won't lose any sleep over it or become aggressive, I'll simply position alongside the next car and ask again. The maximum number of attempts it's ever taken me is three - someone always lets me in nicely and I'll still end up calmly and safely ahead of the Basil Fawlty who's still blowing steam out of his ears.

Local urban duel carriageway , left hand lane is a Bus Only lane 4pm to 6pm.

Yes you've got it , 95% of traffic uses the right hand lane 24 hours a day, then honks at and tries to block anyone legally using the left lane . Utter morons that never read road signs !

This is a problem anywhere with bus lane time limits, it's often just less hassle to follow all the idiots

  • As a cyclist these are my pet hates:

    1. The "Left Hook": A car passes you then immediately turns left across your path, causing you to brake (if you're lucky) or else go over his bonnet, superman-stylee
    2. People who overtake too close
    3. Car passengers who shout stuff at you as they pass. Tip: With all the road noise cyclists can NEVER hear whatever moronic rubbish you're shouting. So save your breath.
    4. People who bang on about cyclists not paying "road tax". 1. Road tax does not exist and 2. Even if Vehicle Excise Duty *did* apply to bicycles, they would be in the lowest emissions band, therefore would pay nothing anyway.
    5. Cyclists who break the law, giving the rest of us a bad name. Although there are not as many of these around as some drivers like to imagine.

The part time bus lane that goes past the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport is a great one for idiots queuing in the right hand lane when they don't need to, so I'm sure it causes much road rage when I sail down the bus lane perfectly legally. In the rare event of finding a bus in it that actually needs to stop and let people off, it's still usually faster, even if it's full of old people.

For bonus points, the right hand lane terminates with a traffic island, so they are forced to merge left and give way to me.

I have no qualms doing this as everyone else could use the bus lane perfectly legally if they bothered to read the signs.

As for cyclists, the only abuse I've ever heard car drivers shout at cyclists is "Get some ****ing lights". I have no objection to the principle here.

Most of these things can be pretty annoying but I find even worse:

    1) Happily cycling along and a car up ahead is waiting to come out of a side road on the other side of the road to go the same direction as you.

Rather than go before or after you they will wait exactly till you are level with them before pulling out.

    2) A car ahead going in the opposite direction stops to turn right into a side road.

Rather that wait till you have fully passed before turning they start to turn across your path just as you are passing them.

When I am riding my bike I am amazed at the lack of respect given to cyclists. I ride my bike on a local nature reserve and to get there I have to ride less than one mile on the road. The first part of this I ride on the pavement as its a busy road where I have had two cars written off and seen countless accidents. (15 foot wide pavement,I ride slowly). The second part is along a smaller road with shops at the beginning with a junction at the end, then a 15 yard ride to a right turn.On this short ride I have had drivers change their mind at an island when they spotted roadworks ahead and suddenly decide to turn right accross my path instead of going straight on. I have had car doors opened in front of me, pedestrians walking into the road, cars pulling away alongside of me, cars and buses driving directly toward me demanding I get out of the way despite there being nowhere for me to go, oversized, self important drivers in large and tired mercs/BMWs bib me expecting me to leap out of the way for them to overtake. One woman looked both ways but not in front and drove straight into me, "Great" I thought as I slid down her bonnet. And twice had cars about to overtake me as I turned right onto a side road, one even stopped to tell me where I was going wrong.:mad::mad::mad::mad:.. Rant over. Next time you see a cyclist on the road, please be nice to them.

  • I feel your pain and anger. I know that most driving schools nowadays teach a defensive style of driving but some drivers are not comfortable in driving at certain speeds. I was stuck behind someone doing around 27mph in a 50mph limit for 8 miles as the stretch of road can be bad for overtaking, but, when you indicate to overtake the tw*t speeds up or moves over the lane as a reaction to your movements.

Bring out National Minimum Speed Limits on A roads and Motorways and a Maximum National Speed Limit within built up areas.

As for undertaking, I'm sorry if folk don't agree, but, if your doing 50mph in the outside lane of a dual carriageway and the limit is 70mph you should expect people to undertake you. Unfortunately the police will still "do" you for it but not have a word with the individual driving without due care and attention by preventing traffic flowing in a natural manner on the road.
