That said, I don't tend to drive down the empty lane as I know it annoys people, and if they are happy to get to their destination slower but without being annoyed by me, that's fine.

I know it annoys people as well, you can tell when you get to the front and you get the warriors of the queue being responsible and playing blockade with 1-2 tonnes of metal :wall:, or you get the arm waving, or horn and lights treatment. But it's what you should be doing, utilising all space of the road, and merging in turn.

I don't mind that several disagree with me - that's what the forum is for.
I do know that me being in the lane that remains open will not annoy anyone, cause a crash or road rage.
You can argue all day with the 18stone white van man that the highway code says you're right as he climbs out of his van to discuss the matter further.

I'll join the inside lane with a mile or so to go and get to my destination with no one giving me hand signals.

UGH!! Queues!! What is it with us Brits and f*cking queues????
There are two lanes for a reason, the traffic speed is completely irrelevant!!!
If the section of dual carriage way is 1 mile long and you've got 2 miles of traffic, where does that extra mile go? it goes into your town, your side roads, you entire local road infrastructure and blocks it all!! For NO good reason other than people getting upset about so called "queuejumpers".

In Europe you HAVE to use both lane's and merge, it enforceable under the law!!

Why do people block the road when there's slow traffic? would they do this if both were travelling at 60mph? NO

It's illegal to cause an obstruction and if you do and I hit your car, i've got a dashboard camera to show exactly who's fault it was!

I've started to see signs that say "Use both lanes" when there are merge in turns at road works. As long as driver in the 2nd lane indicates I'll quite happily let them complete their merge. If they do not or try to force their way in then I won't give an inch.

Well you are entitled to your opinion ofc, but you did say that someone already hit you as a result of not relenting and letting them in.Personally I don't want any collisions whether they are classed as my fault or not.It is annoying when someone appears to push in, for years I thought the same as you but now I have a different outlook

The 2 lanes at traffic lights etc and I can think of excellent example for anyone who has ever drive in Nottingham- the A610 (I think) near Queens hospital. It has lots of extra lanes at light, up to 4 going into 2 and when I was doing my advanced driving course around there we were bollocked for not using the extra lanes.I'd get past so much traffic using these extra lanes without having to speed or even accelerate any more than usual. That was what the instructors were looking for as it shows awareness, keeps your momentum and doesn't inconvenince others if done properly.

I have tried all variants.Sitting in the long queue, driving past the queue and merging near the roadworks, stopping cars from merging and even blocking both lanes (I was young and foolish :o ).I now use whatever lane I want. If cars overtake,I do not care. Without the roadworks the same cars would probably have overtaken me anyway. I could be doing the exact same thing but chose today to be in this lane. Most of the problems at merge in turn roadworks are caused by drivers insisting they have done the right thing and demanding others do as they have done. They double the length of the traffic queues and instigate accidents as shown above.

Where it does really annoy me is on the motorway when the gantry shows a big red cross (ie leave this lane now) and certain drivers see it as a 'this is your own private lane' sign. Likewise when you're stuck in accident traffic where all 3 lanes are solid and people use the hard shoulder as their own private lane.

I did see one driver who decided that all the signs warning of an accident weren't relevant to him so he sprinted off down the hard shoulder only to come face to tail with a police car attending an accident. He was being ticked off when I drove past, and most drivers saw it and had a smile. :D

I would echo that rude drivers are the worst, whether they are the ones pushing out, undertaking, cutting in etc or the ones refusing to let anyone into 'their' lane of traffic. I turned left off a roundabout to find that my lane was closed in 100 yards. Not a problem, the other lane is completely empty. Had to stop at pedestrian lights though. In the meantime other cars filled up the other lane, and then all refused to let me in. I hadn't 'queue jumped' pushed or been rude, just been unlucky. One car even sped up and swerved around me to close a gap I was easing into (nearly hitting me) then beeped her horn and shook her fist. I called her a silly bint and waved at her :p

The worst part about the "everyone dives into the left lane to queue" situation is that it literally doubles the length of the queue meaning it's twice as likely to affect people who want to exit the motorway at the junction before the queue, generally making congestion worse.

If they wanted that lane not to be used they would have closed it down.

About 6 months ago similiar situation no road works, just a DC that merged into one lane, I drove down RHS and thought something was wrong, drove past what was 2 miles of traffic, WOW where are they going.

Just happened same way I was just they were not using both lanes. If they are not there to be used they wouldent be there.

If you want to que you be my guest but dont screw at me for using the full road as it was designed for.

You can watch me cruise by and save myself some time.
