mustrum_ridcully - but you're not thinking this through are you? The people on the inside lane aren't using the zipper system like they're meant to. 'Mr Pushy' is doing it right by flying down the outside lane (the one you should've taken!) and then merging in at the end. If the numpties on the inside lane are using their mirrors and anticipating, there should be no slamming on brakes, that's bad driving, blend in and let people merge.
If everyone approaches this situation thinking 'I'm going to let ONE person from the other lane in get in front' then the system will work and the traffic mightn't even stop.

Two wrongs don't make a right!

Mr Pushy isn't doing it right if he forces his way in! He is just as bad as the people who won't let him in.

If you can't see the point I'm making then you're as daft as the people who won't let others merge!

I'll assume the 'you' refers to people in general as I know how the zipper system works, have been in both lanes, seen both sides of the arguement. I let people in but I've also dealt with people who've forced their way in (I particularly hate piggy backers who force their way in straight after the car I've just let in), I've been stuck where some idiot won't let you merge but always found that someone will let you in!

People who think that the white lines at the edge of country roads mean that you can't stop.

This street is barely 3 car widths wide. You can just see a car parked at the top of the image. That's my GF's old car and she was less than an inch from the curb as is the other red car on the bottom right of the image. The bloke in the image is the driver, pictured locking his car.

And they say women can't park.

He's lucky that a fire engine or a bin lorry doesn't want to get pass as he would have no car. ;)

Lum- that picture's hilarious! How can he not see how badly he's parked?

Once was told a story by security in a local centre- they have limited parking available. They used to get a guy who worked in one of the shops arriving early every day, and parking as close as he could to the entrance taking two spots. I've taken two on occasion, as the doors on mine are long, and some parking areas are quite tight- but I'd always stay away from the entrance.
Anyway, this guy had annoyed a few people, and security were getting sick of answering complaints over him. He couldn't be talked to, apparantly- it fell on deaf ears.
One day, security, chatting to a rally team participating in an event nearby, happened to mention it. Within seconds, two spare rally cars had shown up.
Security asked what they were for, and received the sanguine reply- "Let's watch him get in his car now!"
The rally cars had taken the spaces on either side, leaving less than an inch clearance to the double-parker's doors on both sides.

Apparantly, security had a fantastic time watching it later on camera....

mustrum - yep, a generalisation, and making the point that if someone does fly up the outside, and arrives at the end at the same time as you, you SHOULD let him in, as you say, and that isn't him forcing. Someone trying to piggyback is definitely cheating though as you say and breaks the one at a time rule!

I do get annoyed at people who believe that a slip road is for pootering down, then stopping at the end because there's a car somewhere on the road. NO. Please use it to check the traffic on the road you're joining and adjust your speed to match it, and adjust your position so that you can fit into a gap. Otherwise there will be a queue of annoyed drivers behind you now unable to join the A34 because they can't speed up.

Nor is a slip road for driving down paralel to the big, dented white van then trying to barge it out of the way when you run out of lane. 1) I can't move over as there is a car next to me 2) It's a hill, I can't speed up 3) It's a hill I'm not going to slow down as I'll never get to the top 4) Does it really look as though anyone takes care of this van? Your shiny mercedes with personalised number plate is another matter though....

Cyclists who fail to take note of red lights, stop signs, pedestrian crossings etc. I work in Oxford and have to regularly drive and walk through it. The number of cyclists who I've had shouting at me when I'm a pedestrian as I walk accross the road to a green man and they want to jump the red lights. And the ones who stop 20 yards over the stop line at the lights. There's a reason that line is so far back, it's to allow turning space for larger vehicles, like lorries. And your red light means stop because I have a right turn filter light, but that's ok, you put your head down and pretend that traffic laws don't apply to you and you haven't just nearly been squashed. And if you've got a cycle lane, why aren't you using it? Instead, you're holding up 3 buses.

And one last thing that winds me up....

Botley Road during term time. Nuff said.

I actually quit a job because I couldn't cope with spending so much time sitting in stationery traffic around Botley. I had to come up the A420 from Swindon direction towards Cowley, via Botley (during rush hour), and I managed to last three whole months.

My pet hate though is people driving at 35-40mph on a wide, straight but busy country road. When there's traffic coming in the opposite direction and it's impossible to overtake, you get huge queues behind one old codger. There is just no need and it does make me very cross.
