Having just read the messages here, I understand that the multiroom box does callbacks, but does anyone know if the older sky box that has just been replaced would also do callbacks? Thanks.

Both boxes have to be connected to the same phone line and yes both will do callbacks to ensure this is happening.

Trying to understand.....The replaced sky box is now lying around unplugged and unused at my Dad's, and so presumably the new sky box and the multiroom box are currently handling the callbacks there, right? In which case, why could I not use the old sky box (and viewing card) at the new address? Is it that the callbacks are linked to the viewing cards rather than the boxes themselves? Thanks.

Viewing cards must be paired with the box to work properly. Callback is then sent to the box that the card is paired with.

When your Dad got his new box, his card was paired with that new box.
  • If the box is lying around connected to no 'phone line at all then your Dad won't be billed for a full subscription as the box won't fail a call-back as it won't make one. To avoid potential problems with failed call-backs, your father should either re-connect the box to the same landline as his main digibox or cancel Multi-Room.
If you take the box and attempt to use it elsewhere it will fail it's callback and your father will receive a bill for an additional full subscription. Nothing to struggle with understanding, using a Multi-Room subscription at another address is basically theft.
  • unless they've changed things, it'll fail the call back and you get a letter telling you to plug it up and do it manually. After a while they stop bothering.
I've got multiroom and having it plugged in caused no end of problems with my broadband (right at the limit on the exchange). They'd send me a letter, I'd plug it up and do the call back but when I was out of contract they stopped doing the call backs. I haven't had a letter for a good few years now.

If you are still paying a subscription the callbacks will not have stopped at all. You have obviously convinced Sky that your Multi-Room was indeed at the same address as the main subscription.

To clarify, I wasn't interested in using the multi-room box specifically, I was interested in using the second viewing card with the currently spare and unused main box. Based on what's been said though, it seems better now just to let the whole thing go.

Ah okay, cool. Thanks for clearing that up.

That's just as dishonest, but you would be prevented from doing so by the pairing system.

There WAS an issue a couple of years ago, with some Sky multiroom customers who got their phone/bband thru TalkTalk LLU - certainly my S-I-L got a letter from Sky re call backs not happening even tho' both boxes were connected to a working phone line -think, in the end, Sky had to allow him to continue without extra sub.because TalkTalk would not admit that it was their exchange kit creating the problem. Don't know if that issue still exists?
