Just seems bizarre that it works at all in a totally different location.

Nothing bizarre about it. All it needs to work is a dish and a card - it's got that. What gives its location away is the connection toa phone line.
And I do wonder how legally watertight the exhortation to 'keep it attached to a phone line' is...

Perfectly legal. The T&C of multiroon state that you must use both boxes at the same location and that they both be attached to the same telephone line.
  • Thanks for this. I expect I'll get round to taking the card out at some point. Just seems bizarre that it works at all in a totally different location. And I do wonder how legally watertight the exhortation to 'keep it attached to a phone line' is...

Of course it will work, the saterlite transmitting does not know where the box is, how do you think bars in spain etc get UK Sky?

However, the phoneline stipulation in the contract is watertight. Once the callbacks start failing they will simple charge you for 2 seperate subscriptions.

Don't ever think that you can get one over on Sky, they are far too clever for that..

    Why?

I would love to see that.

"Sky takes someone to court because they moved their multiroom to another house"

If you give advice at least get it right

Robert.. I said I was no expert.... If you have nothing constructive to say then don't add your opinion.. There is a way of expressing your views without getting people's backs up.

I would think Sky have millions of customers who dont have the sky box connected to a phoneline, the subscription data is on the card and is changed over the air, move the box and card to another location, how are sky to know ? this is how you can watch Sky when holiday in another country, on a non multi room subscription they would like you to have the box connected to the phone line in case you want to make a impulse purchase of sky box office or the games thing, but its not compulsory.
The thing with multi room is they let you have two cards for your package price + £10, to stop you doing what you have tried on a permanent basis, is insist both boxes are connected to the same phone line, then when the boxes call sky headquarters they can tell( using calling line identity CLI) if the boxes are connected to the same line or not, if you dont follow the rules they dont prosecute or send round the pick axe handle boys, they charge you 2x your TV subscription instead of 1 +£10, if you dont pay your Sky bills they hound you until you do, or sell the debt to another company
  • We have multi room, moved boxes to different locations in the house, never reconnected to phone line, this was after 3 months and now coming upto 12 months never had one issue with it. They phone line connection is for purchases as this is how your account is charged.
Risk doing it and face the consequences if any or do it correctly.
    Murdoch earns enough :)

  • We have a second sky plus box in the spare room. It has not been conected to a phone line for over 3 years with no complaints from sky.:j

haha this is funny. I havent had my second box plugged into a phoneline since we had it installed. The closest phone line was in another room so when the installer came he said don't worry you dont need it connected unless you want to order box office or if you have a problem. Three years on i've never had a letter from sky (well except the increases in your subscription and sky mags).

All I can say is well done think you've clocked on to a good trick.

Sorry to bring up this old thread!

But I am in this dilema!

I am currently living with my parents who have Sky, and I have Multiroom in my bedroom. Has been there for years, and hasnt been plugged into a phone line for years either!!

I am moving out into my own house in a couple of weeks and have been looking for a half price Virgin or Sky deal but their arnt any! However, the house already has a dish - can I just move my Sky multiroom box to the new property? Can sky find out?! Has anybody sucessfuly done this?

Yes, yes and yes, but see above posts.

Is it a new box? as I have heard that Sky have started to install GPS tracking chips in the new HD boxes. If they are removed from their original place of installation they send a signal to Sky who then send a signal to the box which switches itself off.

That is why there is no need for a phone connection now.

Absolute cobblers - GPS will very rarely work indoors for a start.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
