Sorry guys I haven't actually had time to read all the posts (I will try to sneak a look at all of them later when work allows) but my 2 pennies worth are that firstly merging threads drives me nuts! Yeah there might be a similar thread but it isn't necessarily the same nor applicable to the particular day.
I have done searches in the past and tried in vain for hours to find what I need - done a post and been told in somewhat degrading tones that "oh there was a thread on this HERE I mean are you STUPID not to have been able to see it or something!" (poetic licence taken with the wording I hasten to add, it's just how I was made to feel). And it did put me off... I have been to the Arms and I didn't like it, sorry to those who do. The few posts I've made there have been ignored and no-one ever even bothered to say hello.
So where am I likely to post? A place where my imput isn't even acknowledged or somewhere I feel comfortable and "amongst friends"?
I'm sorry to all those who want a "to the point" board... but OS... well proper good old fashioned "OS" involved chatting to your neighbours across the fence in the back garden, popping round for a cop of tea and discussing recipies etc... If you want pure OS without personality then use the Mega Index and don't bother reading the threads.
I will be very sad if we aren't allowed to "chatter" on the OS board like some seem to want, as for the daily thread... I've read one and replied... I got bored with everyone saying hello and nothing much else... But you know what? I just didn't carry on reading it. I see no reason to "get my knickers in a twist" over itDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Tine, for merging threads I meant ones that were exactly the same, like 'can I freeze milk?' If the question was the same topic as another but slighty different, it could be left as it is? Maybe? I dunno really
There's no easy answer is there
Andreaaaaaaaaaa..........where are you? LOLBulletproof0 -
Got the hump? disgruntled? not happy with the way things are? not happy with the suggested changes?
Go read Math's "You helped me" thread.........
THAT is OS.
Hint for people reading others posts - imagine that they wrote it with a smile on their face, it puts things in a different (better?) perspective:dance:There's a real buzz about the neighbourhood :dance:0 -
LOL, I'm here and writing a flipping essay on this. Just about to start a new thread with it because I think it should be seen by people that may not be reading this tooCould you do with a Money Makeover?

No troo there is no easy answerand I know what you mean about the "freezing milk" kinda threads. But where do you draw the line between if it's the exact same thread topic or if it differs enough to warrent it's own existence? I've posted threads that have been in my eyes seperate but they have been merged and have then "died a death" with no-one replying to it after it as merged... Where is the harm in leaving threads unmerged? and just pointing people to the previous or the mega indexed link relevant?
I run a board myself and I never merge threads and my moderators never merge threads and as you may have guessed then I am not agreat fan of it. People get disheartened by it because it seems THEIR oppinion isn't important enough to be allowed it's own thread...
I can appreciate that people may have little patience but no-one is forced to read any threads they may find repetitive. Isn't it more important that we make people feel welcome and teach them the way of OS for their sake and our environments sake?
Oh troo the above isn't a rant at you hunit's just once I get going I find it hard to stop lol!!!

I'm not a regular poster on the daily thread but I read it so that makes me a regular in a different way.
My ONLY niggle with it was the acknowledgements, not they there shouldn't be any all all, please don't misunderstand, it was the long list that seemed obligatory that I didn't like. It almost looked forced as if the poster was trying hard to find something in EVERY previous post that they could comment on and if one person was missed out I would imagine that they would feel slighted and not included in the gang.
I know where it started, because Queenie originated the daily - and she always started it, no-one else EVER started until the day after the London bombings when Queenie stopped posting for a few months - I think that Queenie felt that it was her *responsiblity* to acknowledge people that posted on *her* thread, and each day she'd look back and make a comment to every poster. When she took a break away from MSE I think that others filled her shoes and carried it on but when Queenie did it it was just her posts that had the list, in recent times there have been a number each day and it got straggly. That is my only beef with the daily.
As far as answering the same questions over and over, I don't see that there is another way to do it, the Mega index is a work of art and we all thank Squeaky for that but if my first visit to O/S to ask a question was a response was 'look in the thread' no matter how kindly it was phrased I feel as if I had done something wrong and wouldn't bother again.
Just stepping to one side of this, on the ebay board there is a looooooong thread that I'm *responsible* for on selling on Amazon, it's being going for over 15 months now and the same questions come back over and over again, all the answers are all in the first post that I wrote, this is a mega peice of work that covers just about all the questions that have ever been asked but people don't read *instructions* (did you read the instructions on how to work your video? no) they want to ask a real human a question and get an answer tailored to the question and if they don't get it they feel ignored. They will get an answer from a regular, maybe then the newbie will repay later and they can answer the same question when asked again on another day0 -

But the question remains.............................................
Can you freeze milk:D0 -
I've read the enormous thread and this one, and slept on it overnight. I've gotta say, I actually prefer it in the Arms and Discussion Time - despite the heated discussions, they seem a friendlier bunch and WYSIWYG, so I'll toddle off. I'll use OS for research - I particularly like the mega indexed threads - and I'll possibly post the occasional question if I can't find the answer anywhere else, but I'm not comfortable now being a regular on the OS board - it just doesn't have that community feel for me like the Arms and DT.The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0
