I don't think anyone wants things rigidly controlled. We need Andrea to strike a balance between too chatty and personal, and no chat at all. We want newbies to feel like they can jump in and feel welcome.
As for the BG's, I've often seen merged threads so they obviously keep an eye on everything. I would imagine though, that the more chat there is, the harder their jobs are. And so, we need AndreaBulletproof0 -
I didn't join in the original discussion, and have no argument with anyone or anything on this board or any of the others, but just wanted to mention that one of my favourite regular threads on the whole site is on DFW - "what have you spent/will you spend today?"
It is informative because I am nosey enough to be very interested in what other people do with their cash, and it also strikes a great balance of everyone being friendly with eachother and following eachother's day-to-day events, while having the central theme of controlling their spending.
Maybe the OS daily thread could be structured around something similar? They (on DFW) also run an ongoing "what have you saved today?" thread. I think OS would lend itself to a daily thread on what people have saved, be it by buying a bargain, store cupboard challenge, not buying something they otherwise would have, walking instead of driving etc.
I know not all those things are literally Old Style, but then neither are electric bread makers or slow cookers.
Anyway keep up the good work everyone, no complaints from me  .I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

I haven't posted on any of the 'other' threads over the last few days, but just want to suggest here that perhaps what is needed are 'guidelines' rather than hard and fast 'rules'. I agree with above that what is good about OS is the community feel and the principle that there is no such thing as a stupid question. For example, there are lots of 'encyclopaedic' style websites where I can access 1001 uses for bicarb and vinegar, but I choose to ask questions on this one because I can hear about tried and tested tips along with a friendly word and an amusing anecdote, all for the price of a single stupid question. I enjoy both giving and receiving advice on here and would be sorry if things became too regulated.
Just my humble opinion

Regulars refering posters to indexes and threads already in action rather than answering old questions.

The only problem with this is that some of the merged/ older threads on more popular topics are quite long - several pages - and I personally don't have time to wade through really long threads - I tend to avoid them deliberately.
Given how OS is all quite linked, wouldn't we just end with, say, twenty really long threads rather than specific questions.
Not sure - just my opinion“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

I agree with MATH's post.
However, I enjoy the banter that occurs in the daily thread and it wasn't that I wanted to see gone (despite what some may think) What I wanted an end to was the lists everyone put, saying a personal message to everyone, regardless of whether it was necessary. That, in the main, has disappeared and it makes the thread much easier to read. I have no problems with a couple of personalised comments, especially if a poster has asked a question.
Today's daily thread has been a p*ss-take, to be quite honest. Yesterday's thread was more along the lines of how it used to be, but today's has degenerated into people sticking one-line posts in - especially to say hello or make some jokey comment. I'm all for light-heartedness and banter, but let's decide what we are going to do on OS and try to stick to it.
If that offends some people, so be it. Let's get back to some semblance of normality. I thought we were all supposed to be grown ups here - maybe not!
edit. I have just read the latter part of the daily thread - and that's what it should be, so not saying you all were taking the proverbial0 -

I thought that too.Bulletproof0 -
Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

It seems to me that different people want different things from the OS daily thread. Personally I've enjoyed using the thread as it's encouraged me to try again when I've missed the mark, and congratulated me when I've achieved something.
I've noticed that there is a 'clique' - a select few that seem to ignore many, but on the most part everyone is supportive of everyone.
My suggestion would be to split the thread into two. One thread would be for the dedicated OSers who could create their own rules for their thread (I certainly wouldn't want to have to create nor implement such rules/guidelines) and perhaps another could be a daily 'OS chat' thread. I appreciate that MSE has the 'Arms' and a discussion thread, but we all know that us OS'ers (and wannabe OSers) are a league of our own, and our contribution to those threads can spark many a 'heated' debate, or 'shooting' IYKWIM. This way people could chose which thread suits them best.
I know that the daily thread has become very long - but I think for the most part it's because it has such a big following now. More contributors = more to discuss. Short of making it a 'members only' club there's very little that can be done about that.
I think it would be a shame to lose the lovely supportive comunity that's developed on the OS daily thread - not everyone has family around to offer this support.
Some may say that my posts about erecting my fence weren't OS. To me they were - these days the 'norm' is to 'pay a man who can'.
Right, I'm finding it harder to not say some things that I know will only cause arguments so I'm going to leave it at that until I'm back to 'calm'.January '06 Grocery Challenge (4th - 31st) £320.Week 1 - £73.99 Week 2 £5.10 (so far)

Blimey ... now I feel like I'm a nuisance for not keeping up with every single thread and having to ask on this particular occasionThe ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal.
