It's a whole lot easier and quicker to point someone to a collection of threads than it is to do a search and then write up links for each new enquiry on the same subject.

More to the point it's like re-inventing the wheeel.

If there's a collection already there to use it's silly not to use it.

If there's a thread full of useful information it's equally silly not to point someone to it rather than type it all out again instead.

Have to stick my oar in here....I too think it's rather unfriendly to direct a new person to an old post, not welcoming at all - though I can see the sense in it.

But TBH because there is always (I hope anyway!) going to be new persons then some questions will inevitably be asked again. I don't mind if something old comes back - v.often a new person will have a different idea or solution to an old question anyway. And an "old" question is of course NEW to a new person.

We were **all** new once. I initially felt threatened about posting when I first joined...but I'm "old" now. I'd be mortified if I came across as one of the clique, or unwelcoming to new people as I still remember how difficult it was for me in the first place.

I think what I am trying to say is that some sort of guidelines or a "map" or something like that of the Old Style board may help and encourage people to settle more quickly. Hope that makes sense...

Not pointed towards you Mrs Mix at all but are we seriously going to put a time on when you are "allowed" to start the thread here? :rotfl: if its the day we post it as then what the heck is the problem:confused:

    no offense taken
and I wasn't saying that it was totally wrong but I noticed over the space of about a week there seemed to be a sort of competition as to who did it first
and that was just my observation as a newbie
and I'm not having a go at anyone as I know what it's like to not be able to sleep

  • I expect a happy medium will have to be reached. It's a bit of 6 of one and half of a dozen of the other. While some have said that they enjoyed Wednesdays thread more, others have said they enjoyed Today's (Thurs) thread more. Sorry about the confusion, it's Friday here. :D

To those who felt yesterday's thread was a p!sstake and to others who didn't post on it because of that reason, it was not started malaciously. It was just a bit of rebellion. We are all school girls at heart :D even though the grey is coming through and TBH this is what a lot of us felt like with all these *rules* of don't do this and don't do that. which very often were the ones doing it as well. For all those who are asleep at night, the Night Owls often have a muck around. It's not the first time peeps have come on in the morning to see that. But if it offends the majority, well it will happen no more.

I never saw any competition to start the thread. It was always whoever felt like it. Nobody really cared, just as long as someone did it first :D so we could jump in. Well thats how I saw it anyway.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

  • Hi, couple of points:

I think, like Kaz, that 2 threads will be what I would choose - one strictly OS, the other chat amongst OS and wannabe OSers, about our day. I've just re-read Kaz's later post, and totally agree about the listing of individual comments to people. I tried to format my "mentioning" to make it easier to read. If people didn't want to read it, fine, skim over it. I don't believe that anyone reads the whole thread word for word; we all skim to some extent.

MATH - take your point about people not searching, but..........the search facility isn't perfect. I believe that there's a thread dedicated to Muffins (my latest passion btw - baking them rather than eating, honest :D ). However, when you search on "muffin" you get pages and pages. I'm hesitant to ask is anyone knows where it is................but my family will be eternally grateful :o We have to cut people some slack, here.

Andrea, to be honest, I reckon it's sorted. Groups need a bit of "stormin' " from time to time, so that we can then get back to "normin' "

Let's all be a big, happy, OS family :grouphug:

I'm sorry I ranted a bit in my post yesterday - I was really upset, can I blame PMT? (only replace pre with post ;) )
Following a good giggle with some chums online last night and a good kip I'm feeling a lot more 'rational'.
Looking at this mornings thread I can see that it does make for much easier reading .... but equally I know there are days when I'd really like an OS chat to encourage me on through my daily tasks and to say hello to others on OS.
I gather there was mention of a coffee shop previously? Perhaps that is now the way forward? A daily thread that is purely one post each to outline the day ahead, and the coffee shop to chat and encourage each other for those who want to?
What does everyone else think? Any other suggestions?
Hope everyone is feeling good this morning :D

Kaz, it didn't seem 'ranty' to me :)

I think someone suggested a coffee shop a while ago - last year, or maybe the year before. I can't remember if it was even started, if it was it died a quick death :D

I'll happily go along with anything, me :D

Still worried about the clique thing though, I still can't see it but I suppose we all read posts differently LOL. More likely, I don't pay enough attention :o

I'm happy having something to do whilst I rant at DD to get ready for school, otherwise I would end up watching Milkshake :(

I can see how it may look unfriendly to direct people to other threads but if the redirection was worded nicely to let the poster know why we've done it then it could be possible. Otherwise we just have to quit moaning, bite the bullet and answer the question again. I really don't mind either way, I was just trying to come up with a solution to the problem. :(
