For meatballs these are delicious http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/meatballs-in-goulash-sauce,1203,RC.html I also add some fresh chilli (or chilli flakes) to spice them up.
Could you also try making something like a cornish pasty (have no idea how!) you could make it into a pie instead of pasties? Ah http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/cornish-pasty-pie,1216,RC.html there you go, she has an answer to everything. Just substitute the chuck steak for your mince!
  • What about doing a spicy type mince in taco shells ? Thats on our menu for tonight !
  • Try Beanmix:
Chop 1/2 an onion and saute in margerine until golden.
Add 1/2 lb mince and brown off.
Add a tin of baked beans and stir in some gravy granules.
Simmer until mince is cooked (about 10 min)
Serve in a soup bowl with bread and butter.

ooo Ive got a marrow to use up - How do you do this? do you just cook the mince and put it inside?

My mother used to make this. You need to make a sauce similar to bolognese or chili-con-carne or just mince and gravy. It needs to be pretty thick and helps if it's well flavoured as marrow's pretty bland. She used to cut off the ends and scrape out the inside leaving about 1/2 an inch of marrow round the outside, maybe a little more. She filled it with the cooked mince mixture and then pinned the marrow ends back in place with a skewer. She then used to bake it in the oven I think at about 19OC for at least half an hour (at that point I get a little fuzzy - I was waiting for it and it seemed like forever!) until the marrow was tender but not beginning to collapse. She'd then slice it up and serve it with veg and rice or potato. Yummy!

My mother, as I do now, added bran, from the health food shop, into the mince to bulk it out and thicken it up. It also added a bit more fibre to it, though you could just reduce the liquid or use cornflour.

I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...

I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!
  • Mince and carrots

Fry onion until soft, add mince and brown.

Then cover mince with cold water, bung in a load of carrots (sliced).

Bring to the boil. Simmer for half hour or so.

Few minutes before serving, sprinkle Bisto gravy on top.

    Serve with spuds.

  • I know you said about having something that isn't chilli.....*but* we love these things as they are a twist! Mexican wraps- take chilli and put into wraps, grate cheese on top, add jalapenos (if you like!!) and then grill until cheese is melted and brown!! Mexican bake- take chilli and cooked pasta, mix and put into a casserole dish thing, grate cheese on top and then cook in the oven until cooked and cheese is brown and bubbling!! Nachos- spread tortilla chips over a large dish, cover with chilli and cheese, and then grill until cheese is brown and then serve with lashings of guacamole, salsa, sour cream and jalapenos!!!! (can you detect a running theme here!!! :D)

Mum always did "rice and meat". Basically make a very thick bolog-type sauce with the mince, onion, chopped tomato, add some veg in (sweetcorn, cauliflower, brocc, whatever). Cook some rice. Mix the two together so its a thick tomato and mince kind of risotto.

I love Bobotie, it is really well known in South Africa, it is a non pastry pie type dish and has a very mildly spiced bottom layer with a thick white sauce that sets on the top. It really is yummy and very economical, we like it with naan bread to mop up the juices. This is a recipe I found online but there are many variations to suit your tastes.
