Get a classic car like MK2 Escort or Ford Capri. There are no driver aides whatsoever other than brake servos. They feel quite quick due to the small size, being close to the road and being so basic. You can maintain them yourself and they'll do >30MPG. Best part about it, THEY NEVER LOSE MONEY. Capris, for example, have gone up at least £500 in the last 12 months.

wow! wasn't expecting quite such a response on this! Due to the number of replies I will have give more info in a general way rather than answer individual questions.

Firstly, I guess fast can be interpreted in more than one way. The car still has to meet certain requirements - not too long (kinda focus sized), 5 doors, petrol, not modified (lose too much value in the past on mods) and 2008 or newer. I will also only be running one car, but I don't commute so it will generally be used when there is little or no congestion.

I've got my eye on one that if I can haggle will be a serious bargain. I guess that will offset the fuel cost issue. I'm trying to be half sensible - I could put more money in or get finance etc but I'm not going to...

It's not that I can't afford the fuel.... its that I can accept an upfront cost for the car.... but its the monthly running costs that will depress me when I check my statements!

To whoever mention personal fuel cards - the link states "Yes you can, however, we do ask that prior to applying for an account you have a minimum monthly spend in excess of £400." £400 amonth!!!!

My 2008 1.8 Focus only does 31 mpg.

I used to have a Mini Cooper and that was doing about 35mpg, everyday driving.

Nothing fast and petrol will do 35mpg!

    Boys and their toys!

I must be the most tolerant wife in the world and should get an award!

My hubby is car mad, he bought a Mazda RX8 nearly 2 years ago and though its lovely to drive, it drinks petrol and oil!

He also has a VW Corrado in the garage, which has been a car he has dreamt about owning since he was younger, I've never driven it but he tells me its fast! That's just been into the garage to have new door handles on!

Last night I caught him on the internet looking at buying a Renault Clio Williams! He wants to buy it and do it up and sell it on!

I know I won't be able to talk him out of it, my driveway is going to look like a garage if he carries on!!

+1 on the Boxster. They've been sitting at around £6500 minimum for around a year now.
    .

Would tread very carefully with Boxsters. There's quite a few failure modes (google RMS, IMS) which kill signficant numbers of the engines on them. You're talking megabucks if you need to repair that.
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

Plenty cars are pretty quick and get very close to the 35mpg.
My last car was a Z4 3.0SE and I could get 40mpg on the motorway. normal driving including my commute I could see 33mpg.
    231bhp and 0-60 in 5.7secs.

My current car is an Audi A4 2.0 T Quattro. It also gets close to 40mpg on the motorway and including my normal commute I can achieve around 33mpg with that too.
255bhp (after remap) and 0-60 is around 5.5secs.

Before the Z4 I had a 1.8 Toyota Celica (140bhp) and I could only get around 35mpg in that. It surprises me that both my cars since the Celica have been considerably more powerful but not used that much more fuel.

    Considered a motorbike?

Still not cheap but a lot cheaper than a car.

My £1000 litre bike gives me far more fun that both the Nissan GTR and the Murcielago I drove recently.

Still sounds like you're sitting in the engine room of a tugboat when you're driving one though. :D

I'll admit you know you're in a diesel when sitting at lights etc as it is a bit louder, but when moving it is remarkably quiet - on the motorway at 70mph the engine is only doing 1700rpm.

The best, most fun car Ive ever driven is a Renault Clio Sport 182bhp upgraded to 200bhp, 2.0 litre petrol engine. Twitch the accelerator and you're OFF!!! BRILLIANT FUN!! :T:T:T:T:T
