If you buy correctly you maybe able to run a faster car with minimal depreciation (this being the biggest cost a lot of the time)
This boils down to
1) Getting a car that will be popular and which is limited edition/long waiting list and running it for a bit then selling it. Hard to do.
2) A wise used buy, cabrio in winter, run it for 18 months selling in the spring after having you 1 summer,
3) a forced/unwanted sale for a low price. See if you can handle the running costs and sell it on if you don't like.
4) A car which has a low depreciation curve, older model Lotus Elise, Porsche Boxter etc.

+1 on the Boxster. They've been sitting at around £6500 minimum for around a year now.
I bought a Passat TDI for the daily 70 mile return commute. Have an MR2 coupe for a bit of weekend fun. I plan to 'trade up' over the next couple of years and maybe have a nice Boxster tucked up in the garage, hopefully with not too much outlay and a bit of fun along the way.0 -
If you want a fast impractical car, and you have the coin, just buy one!
As long as you're prepared to cough up for the insurance, the tax, the fuel, the depreciation, the repairs, yadda yadda - just crack on and just enjoy the damn thing for a year, 2 years, whatever.
You know you could always go for something Japanese - the more collectable cars hold their value well and I can confirm that something like an Integra DC2 is pretty economical when pottering about, but boot it, in whatever gear, hit 5,000 revs and the scenery becomes a blur......it revs out at around 9,000 revs I believe, so bags of oomph in all gears. Phenomenally quick car.

I have a Honda Prelude 2.2 - same kind of performance (200bhp - 0-60 in 6.7 secs) but you can also get 31 mpg with a bit of heavy foot and 35-36mpg driving carefully.0 -
For bang to bucks, get a bike. Cheap to buy, low depreciation, never stuck in traffic and great fun.0

I'd want a fiat coupe 24v turbo or toyota supra RZ twin turbo if I had more money than sense. Doubt they'll ever go down in value either.0

My BMW does min 60mpg (over 80mpg ridden sensibly) and will accelerate quicker than anything with four wheels this side of a Porsche - and it isn't even quick for a bike!
If you go for a BMW S1000RR, you'll get 180bhp in a bike weighing about 180kg. Short of a Veyron, nothing will accelerate like it. And it will probably still manage to do about 40mpg.
And what's even better, you don't get stuck behind matey-boy in his Ka, as you can filter0 -

Nice bike, but I think you will find it a lot thirstier than any of the old boxer engines. I very much doubt, I would get 40mpg. Never have on any 4 cylinder litre bike.
