I am returning mine today requesting a replacement. It just has not been reliable at all. Keeps losing connection every few minutes. Have followed the advice given via the phone support service.
Can only hope that the replacement will work.
  • Hi all,

I got mine few days back. Set up was ok, but the software refuses to install properly. some SQL server error etc. More than, what i am concerned is about the reading on the monitor.

Despite switching off everything waiting for couple of minutes, the reading is between 200 - 230 watts. Could it be a device malfunctioning or there is some electricity leackage (if such thing exists)? Mine is a flat with only electric in it and I am on economy 7

    cheers

Switch everything off and look at your meter. If there is any movement on the meter, then electricity is still being used by something, in which case it needs to be checked as you will be paying for something you are not using. If the meter records nothing then you are probably OK so check the set up of the monitor again.

Yes, I have done that. Switched off all the main switches, except for the one needed forthe energy fit monitor. I still get a reading of 200 Watts. How can I go about investigating what it is which is consuming this electricity?

Don't rely on the monitor reading. Check your meter to see if it is recording any usage with everything switched off (you can unplug the monitor too). If that shows any usage with everything switched off, then you need to find out what's causing it.

Do you have a distribution panel just after the meter with breakers or fuses? If there is any usage with everything switched off, that may help you isolate further where the power is being consumed.
Of course, it could just be that the transmitter for the monitor is on the wrong supply cable, or it could be faulty, so taking the monitor out of the equation is a good start.

    Hi vikramrkin

I agree with victor2's excellent advice. Ignore the monitor at this stage and concentrate on your meter.

If everything is turned off but the meter is still recording usage, it certainly looks a though there is a problem and you should contact us asap.

One thing to check is the Meter Serial Number. Make sure the one on the meter is the same as the one on the bills. If it is different, we may be charging you for someone else's usage and this will need sorting out.

Hope this helps vikramrkin. Give me a shout if you need any more advice as will be happy to help.

Thanks a lot for your advice. I am a novice in this, so not very sure what you mean here. Should I switch off everything and wait for the meter reading to move?

@EON Company Rep: My meter was faulty was replaced recently (2 months ago). Since then, I have not verified the meter serial no on the bill. Good point, I will check that.

    Thanks for all the help.

Yes, turn everything off and give in 10 mins. If it's still moving you either have a tamper or devices connected you are no aware of e.g. communal supplies.

Was the meter replaced based on a meter accuracy check? If not, what was the fault as it might be connected to this.

To get an idea what you are looking for, watch your meter with your house in a "normal" state and see what the meter shows over a short period of time, like 5 minutes. Different meters have different displays and sensitivity. If you have a meter with a rotating dial in it, you can just time one revolution of that (there's usually a mark on it's edge you can observe. It should say somewhere on the meter what one revolution is in kWh (mine says that 200 revolutions is one kWh).
Switch something on that consumes a known amount of power, like a few 60 Watt light bulbs (if you still have some!) Watch the meter again and you should see the difference. Watch out for something like a fridge cutting in while you're observing the meter though, that can have quite an effect on the energy used. 100 Watts for 1 hour equates to 0.1kWh, so you're not looking for large numbers.

Once you've got an idea, switch off everything you can in the house, and check your meter again. You're bound to leave a few things on like clocks, video recorders, alarm systems, but your usage should be very small, like considerably less than 100W. If it isn't, then you should investigate further.

Meter was replaced as it had a manufacturing defect (they were replacing all the meters in the area) and stopeed working.
