  • I think its good, as we can see an estimate of what we have saved by turning off the equipment in you home like TV's Mobiles etc.

    My meter now seems to be working. I eventually got it to work by moving the claw to various positions along the mains wire between the fuse box and meter. Eventually, for no apparent reason, it now works.

    I notice, though, as soon as you switch any appliance on or off, or a fridge/freezer/central heating thermostat clicks on or off, the monitor's energy and cost data goes blank for 2 to 3 minutes.

    The idea is good but I have major reservations about the accuracy and reliabilty of the data and of the instrument itself.

    I have installed my new fit monitor this morning but can only set one unit rate. I rang eon who said this was correct ? but how can I accurately set my monitor seems a bit useless if I can only set one rate as one is quite high and one is lower. Has anyone else experienced this ? Is there a way to overcome this issue.

  • I got my meter today, and just wanted to say 2 things. (And before I do I am fully aware that the costs shown are just an estimation extrapolated from the usage at that point!)

    Firstly, the quality is not high on the meter. Firstly, the power connection seems very poor, and if I move the unit at all the power cuts out, however if I move the cable around it will come back on.

    Secondly, I live in a very old house, built in 1710, and as such have no cavity insulation. Now I knew my electricity bill was far bigger than it should be but until this point I had not realised what was causing it. At £120 pm or so, I was told by the power company that it wasn't completely out of the ordinary considering a 4 bed detached, single skin building etc. I have reduced where possible, and even installed all LED bulbs, although we have to use a drier thanks to a combination of the good ol' English weather and 4 children. No matter what else I tried I couldn't find a way to significantly reduce the bill further. Anyway, today I plugged the meter in today and sure enough it showed usage at approx £140 pm, so I went around and turned off various things to see the difference and got it down to about £130 pm. (I could have unplugged a marine fish tank showing a £20 pm usage, but that would kill the fish!) So then I tried one other thing. I have a single glazed lean-to conservatory on the back which I use as an office, and to keep the frost off, we have a small oil-filled radiator in there on most of the time. As I was just turning things on and off to see the effect on the meter, I turned this off, and WOW. The usage meter dropped to approx £70 pm. Accuracy aside, it appears that single heating unit was consuming approx half of my total usage for the entire house!
    Obviously I have now left it off, and will work out how to keep that space warm whilst I still have non-frostbitten fingers to type with :), however wanted to let others know of my findings.

    Just put in the secondary rate. You can work out an equivalent "standing charge" by multiplying the difference between the two rates by the kWh threshold for switching over to the secondary rate and dividing by the number of days that applies to. You will always use the threshold amount anyway, so that is reasonable.
    The meter itself is not that accurate though and by looking at the downloaded data, I can't see how it arrives at the costs from the data it has, so I take the costs shown with a pinch of salt.

    Mine arrived today and l must say l am disappointed. The connection between the transmitter and the monitor keeps disconnecting several times a minute. The time is also losing 10 mins every hour.

    I rang the helpline and was advised that the clock issue was a known problem and to rectify this l should turn the monitor off for an hour and then when back on it should have resolved it.

    In repsect of monitor disconnecting, l was asked if the monitor was in the same room as any wireless items i.e computer, l said it was as the pc's and the router are in the same room. So l was told to place it in a room where there is no wireless connections! Very odd l feel as in my opinion the whole house is wireless (wifi)

    So not sure how l can use it yet, clearly l cannot have it next to the PC to use the software

    Oh well

    We also found that the oil filled radiators cost a fortune to run. The cheapest thing we found to use was a calor gas heater. Only switched on when in the room so not left on. Approx. £28 a bottle

    Mine is next to my computer and works fine with my Wifi connection and wireless mouse next to it.
    The clock on mine gained a few minutes a day when I got it, but after a few power cycles, sorted itself out and is pretty accurate now.
    The readings themselves are not very accurate, but it's a good guide to when significant amounts of electricity are being used and by what.

    Also, my transmitter is in the garage and the monitor upstairs in a bedroom, so some distance away, but no problem with it disconnecting. It did lose the data when the transmitter fell off the wall it was attached to with the adhesive pads supplied though.:)

    Hi Money Spinner

    I'm afraid the advice given you by our help desk is correct. Only the Next unit rate (the lower second tier rate) and Night rate, if applicable, can be programmed into the monitor.

    I would follow victor's excellent suggestion above. Whilst this may not be exact, it should improve the accuracy a little.
