nor will an unmarried father be classed as next of kin in respect of children
I think you need to look into this claim again, as its not correct.

Both parents should be aware that unmarried fathers do not automatically acquire parental responsibility for the child, although they always share financial responsibility for the child with the mother, and are normally entitled to contact with the child

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

The law changed in the early 2000's (2002 i think).
At that point, as long as the father was on the birth certificate, they had equal responsibility.
Pre that year, you are correct.

do you know as a young mum when i had my son, my health vistor midwife and headteacher all told me not to put the father on the birth certificate because it would give him legal rights, so i never did and so he has no rights to our son, which works out fine with me because he has seen him about 10 times in the 5 and half years of his life, so doesn't deserve the right.

We're getting married before starting a family :)

I think for me it's just because I want us to have the same name. I have a big issue with my family at the moment and so am desperate to change my name to my partners, as his family have been far far more of a family.

Oh and we wouldn't be able to get married in Australia and have a 4 week honeymoon if we had a young child, lol.

Does he pay anything towards his son? For that matter, do you?
