If you sent 100 £40 items unrecorded, I'd call that madness.

    Works both ways.

Your own stats though suggested you believe 1 in 100 buyers are crooks, so on those stats one of those items would go missing. However using recorded on them all would cost £74, so on your own figures, not worth paying £74 to potentially stop one scammer from gaining £41.

Anyway, RM will pay us out and as business losses are a write off against profit.

    Do the maths.

As for me and recorded, if you read the thread, I don't have the hassle. I changed from RD long ago, due to it's unreliability.

1 in a 100 is a bit of a random plunge on my part.

5 losses out of 1120 is certainly a more welcoming figure.

They were much better last year, I went a full year with no losses at all, although I did lose one incoming item.

Ideally I'd love a proper account with Royal mail, but unless i stop being so lazy and actually start increasing my sales my figures just don't support it.

  • As a regular ebay seller, i find this happens alot.

So now i state in my auctions that i always provide proof of posting, which you ask for when you post the items through the post office.

Also i state that i accept no responsibility for items lost in the post if postal insurance is not purchased, but i will forward on a copy of the proof of posting to the buyer is the item is not recieved.

if you got proof of posting, you should be able to fill in a lost item form and get a photocopy of the proof,

if you didnt, then im afraid the buyer will be able to go through ebay and get a refund as this happened to me a few times. whats annoying is ebay/paypal dont seem to listen to the sellers and give refunds out all over the place.

from now on only offer items with recorded or special delivery if its a higher prices item.
that way its tracked and you can check online to see when it was signed for.
Proof of posting means nothing to Paypal and writing in on your listings " i accept no responsibility for items lost in the post" will only attract trouble from people who are all too happy to prove you wrong.

It is YOUR responsibility to make sure the item gets to the destination in a good condition and you do that by either trusting a company to deliver or by delivering yourself.

You have to protect yourself and idealy should post all items RD at YOUR expense and not ask the buyer for extra postage.

I think the poster rather got that point 4 pages ago!

However if you read th eposts from the last page or so you will see that many of us do not believe that recorded is of any use at all on ebay/paypal. However in a sense of fairness i do urge all my competitors (as i have above) to use it as it means I can outsell them and outrank them on best match.

That'll protect you via Paypal as much as a Rice pudding on the Titanic due to the fact it rarely updates or gets a signature.
  • I have been stung far too many times in the past with 'items not received', so have gone recorded delivery for everything I sell. For the sake of an extra 74 pence, for me it has made selling, safer.

I don't understand why people claim recorded is a waste of money because my last 15 items all tracked correctly.
It makes your listings 74p more expensive.....and no doubt you are asking the buyer to pay for your insurance.

You can still claim from RM with Proof of Posting.....so you really dont need RD.

You are paying 74p for something that only really helps to prove to Paypal that an item has been delivered....and that is not likely to happen enough times to merit paying out 74p a time (or asking your customers to pay it) They will find a cheaper option.

    Yes, I know.

The point I made was meant to mean that a seller would pay for the service themselves, ideally, rather than ask the buyer to pay.

I didnt mean that the seller should use RD, ideally......if you see what I mean?

I see what LT is saying :). If you are going to use RD at all, send it RD and only charge the buyer for normal postage.

I still don't 100% think it is necessary, but you'll never convince everyone.
