  • lol Yes 100 a week is not the norm for me, as a TRS i prob only average 30! I'm happy with that amount and i'd say only 20 of those go RM. I think xmas is going to put numbers up but i highly doubt to get to 100. I wouldn't have the space for all the stock.
  • Oops didn't mean to offend, :D. I took 100 pw as a 'home business' situation, but I guess it depends what you sell. I sell wholesale mostly, so think in cartons and packs rather than by piece.

I haven't sold in that kind of volume for a while, and doubt I ever will again.

I sold postcards and stamps for a while back before the 2008 Act which made everyone hyper-aware of business sellers and what constituted one. As a part-qualified accountant I knew the rules on what I could and couldn't do with my own personal goods, but it got difficult with my collection because I would use the money I got selling on eBay to acquire stuff for my collection, and the line probably got very blurred between what I should be declaring as taxed income and what not. Then I gave up when the new regulations came in and it was virtually impossible to prove to people it was my own stuff. I never thought to send anything like what I was selling tracked, but it wasn't the kind of market that attracts fake INRs (only one in six years of selling on/off) and I haven't ever had a lot of problems with it.

I have sold the odd unwanted phone or whatever - those always go some sort of signed for - but that's about it.

  • In the case of this thread, had the Op sent the jeans recorded it may have saved them a lot of hassle.

We do not know for certain whether their buyer is genuine or not about receiving the jeans.

If they had to sign for it and info was updated, they can't claim they never received them.

As good as most buyers are, there are dishonest ones, and sending items recorded can protect against them, dependant on Royal Mail of course.

As recorded delivery fails to get a signature a high proportion of the time or the RM website fails to update. More than likely it would not have made any difference. All sending things recorded does it put your selling prices up and makes you less money. You have the same RM Insurance be it recorded or not so as long as you claim you will not be out of pocket.

    Completely disagree with that comment.

I have sent over 100 items this year via recorded and every single one has updated within a week.

I am talking about parcels that have been sent all over the UK.

I'm another one where recorded virtually never ever tracks.

I also think we need to look at this another way, if a seller believes every one on ebay is out to scam them then maybe they need to rethink their online selling. The majority of buyers are honest, all of us on here are buyers for a start. If i had to protect against the one in a million who will try it on it becomes completely non cost effective. I'm currently sending around 140 parcels a month , sending that lot recorded would cost me (and it i the seller who ultimately pays) £103.60 a month, goodness knows how many dishonest buyers iI would have to meet to recoup that from my profit.

However with my business hat on I do of course urge all my competitors to use recorded, it makes my profits higher as I outrank you in best match, look cheaper and also look like I actually trust people. So everyone, go use recorded....

As a buyer or seller does it virtually never track?

Surprised that recorded delivery is so unreliable for you.

If I sold 100 items and around 5% failed to track I would certainly have second thoughts about using it but my items virtually always track.

    In my experience, both.

I've received several packets through the door with recorded stickers on that I didn't need to sign for. I was shocked when I actually had to sign for one the other day.

Acting as if all buyers are thieves is just counterproductive and I would be making a mental note not to buy from you if you were posting here with your official eBay account. It's not that I think you would try and diddle me deliberately, I just can't take a chance on it, you know...

I was sending mainly work documents via recorded mainly to three addresses, two in London one in kent and they never tracked, not ever, zilch. I finally persuaded work not to bother but I do still have to send an occasional thing in via recorded and again no tracking, and they go to new sites mainly throughout the South East.

AS for incoming, it comes through my door with all the other post and never requires a signature. Although two weeks ago my son was carded for a recorded item, however it was lost at the sorting office and didn't turn up for 4 days, so that was worrying.

Including outgoing and incoming I suppose around 1 in 25 tracks at the moment.
