HGV's in lane 2. Grrrr...

How would this device work? Would you pay for the extra fuel? Take Windy Hill on the M62, the climb from J25 - J23. If I climbed that as fast as I could, around 50MPH, I'd do 2.5MPG for the whole 7 mile stretch. If I had a device remove power, I would have to fight through the gears to try and maintain momentum, eventually ending up screwing the nuts off it at 35-40MPH. The MPG for that 7 mile stretch would be 1MPG. Yes, you read that right, 1 mile per gallon. So I'd use 7 gallons of diesel instead of just shy of 3. That's an extra £15 or so for that one hill.
Just to put things into some kind of perspective....
I never claimed it was perfect :rotfl:
Then again.... If all lorries were accurately restricted to an exact top speed (within say 0.1%), then surely you'd never have the situation of 2 lorries, one doing (for example) 60mph and one doing 60.5mph side by side for miles and miles?
To be honest though, I personally have no issue with it.
I take motorway journey's at a steady pace with the cruise control on, so unlike other drivers who speed up and slow down constantly, I don't tend to find it so stressful“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

I certainly can't see much wrong with raising the limit to 60-65 for HGV's.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -

Have you alerted a physicist about this gravitational anomaly?Skip dipper and proud....0 -

I'd rather ban caravans from daylight hours.
Idiot there are very few caravans on the road normally unless its holiday period. They are also not restricted to 56 mph like lorries are so should move faster."Save the cheerleader - Save the world"0 -
harveybobbles wrote: »It's amazing how much congestion they cause when one pulls out to over take the other. Yes they're all professional drivers and without them we wouldnt have food in the shops.
But if they are proff drivers - then they should leave enough distance to the one in front. Therefore not needing to overtake...
I dont get it
Not every lorry can go at 56pmh for various reasons, so we expect them all to go as slow as the slowest lorry and not over take.
We would be better enforcing lane discipline for cars. The number that just sit in the middle lane or out sidelane with no intentsion of over taking but have either not been trained properly or just too stupid to realise that they are doing it. You should only be in the middle lane or outside lane if you are overtaking another vehicle.
I actually think the American idea of passing on both sides works extremely well. This coupled with the fact the police clamp down on speeding really hard over there means everyone travels at the same speed any how which means the traffice flows more freely.
They need to trial it over here. (not that i am anti speeding)"Save the cheerleader - Save the world"0 -
HGV'S should be fitted with overtake buttons whereby they are allowed to increase their speed to 70 to overtake slower moving vechicles. This button should only last for a minute and should be limited in the amount of time it can be used an hour, say to 10 times an hour.
There should also be a sign on the back of the HGV that allows other road users to see that it is using this overtake button.Iva started Dec 2018.0 -
Ban tractors between 8 and 9 on dual carrageways.
Rant done.I all have learnt is from others on many sites.
Seek legal help if unsure.
Dont pay Private Parking tickets - they are mere invoices.

There country is also 4 times larger with the same population spread out hence not the same denisity of people all trying to get to similar locations.
Though i do like driving in france but the french do have better lane discipline too."Save the cheerleader - Save the world"0 -
Seems to work quite well on the M42.... (bits of it are restricted - no HGVs in lane 2)
Dunno if it was just a trial though, might have changed since last summer.
I travel down the M42 each day to and from work, J9 to J10, where there are NO restrictions on LGV's in lane 2 - unfortunately there are only 2 lanes anyway on this part of the motorway and it causes huge tailbacks.
You can especially see it on the opposite side of the carriageway......empty motorway..... empty motorway..... empty motorway.... oh there we go, truck at 56 mph attempting to overtake a truck at 55 mph and a huge queue of traffic stuck behind. :mad:0
