I ask this as it can be quite irritating when you're ambling along in lane 3 @ 70/75 when a HGV pulls from lane one to lane two... The whole of lane two then shoves into lane three causing lane three to drop to about 60mph. This goes on for the next mile and a half while the lorry gets past and gets back into lane one...

3 lanes! You don't know your born! Around here we only get 2 lanes on our motorways, and we're grateful for it an' all!0 -

The other argument about lorries nose to tail in lane one so nobody can enter or leave the mororway is rubbish as well. Would they not leave a safe gap between them and the lorry in front? Is this gap larger than most cars?
I'm confident I could join and exit a motorway if they were keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front of them. Those that cant will avoid motorways altogether so it's win win.
Is this what I said? err NO, when the other vehicle wants to pull out I move into the other lane and let him/her pull out to overtake and I carry on at whatever speed I'm doing and then pull back in to the left hand lane

One thing I can't stand on motorways are Middle Lane Hogs.
Coming down the M5 on Monday the overhead gantry signs read "Don't hog the middle lane" but some people just seem to have a mental blockage about this. There was still lots of middle lane hogging. One of my mother's friends says she always stays in the middle lane because it is all too confusing and that way she can only ever be half wrong!I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0 -
this is one of my all time bug bears :mad::mad:
you can see the effects for miles of a dumb !!! lorry driver trying to overtake a 1mph slower HGV on a 3 lane motorway .
Road pricing via black boxes has been discussed by the last Government , but the opposition by the masses of car drivers will be vote loser . BUT i think the next logical step is to keep the HGV's off the road in sociable hours ( AKA when the majority of people travel) . give them tax breaks and incentives to put them on the road in the middle night ( carrot) and then then hit them in the pocket if they insist on clogging the roads up during the day ( stick )
it could work IMO . as a railway man it is a obvious solution . Rail freight mostly travels out of the way of passenger trains , the daytime paths are charged at a premium. is it so hard to apply the same principles on the roads ?? our roads are a asset it's time we used them smarter !!!
Why would giving drivers a tax break and incentives encourage them to drive at night ?.........they dont actually pick the times to drive , they dont drive lorries for a hobby you know
Its more to do with dumb !!! shoppers expecting to shop 24/7 , and supermarkets not holding much in stock
I say ban people off the roads who dont drive for workVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -

Lane 3 is for over taking ( as id lane 2 ) , its not for ambling along !Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -
I've changed my driving style radically recently - and with it, I've changed my attitude to lorries...
I used to curse and moan with the best of them about lorry drivers - causing me to slow from 90 to 60...
Now, as I do 60 all the time, I love lorries overtaking each other - it's the only time I can get into the fast lane. Chill out, slow down, save money0 -
The problem occurs with two lorries traveling at an almost identical speed.... So how about fitting a device to lorrie's that slows them down by 5 mph when another one is overtaking them??
Infact, that'd be great in cars too.... It'd stop those idiots who drive about slowly and accelerate when you try to overtake!“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

How would this device work? Would you pay for the extra fuel? Take Windy Hill on the M62, the climb from J25 - J23. If I climbed that as fast as I could, around 50MPH, I'd do 2.5MPG for the whole 7 mile stretch. If I had a device remove power, I would have to fight through the gears to try and maintain momentum, eventually ending up screwing the nuts off it at 35-40MPH. The MPG for that 7 mile stretch would be 1MPG. Yes, you read that right, 1 mile per gallon. So I'd use 7 gallons of diesel instead of just shy of 3. That's an extra £15 or so for that one hill.
Just to put things into some kind of perspective....0 -

I really knew you pulled into the next overtaking lane, thats why I mentioned trucks travelling in close proximity for miles. So now your in lane 3, with an empty 2nd lane "anticipating".:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
